Hackettstown Regional Medical Center -- a facility built with grassroots community support at a time when the nearest hospital was 17 miles away -- will now be part of Atlantic Health System, officials are expected to announce today.

The acquisition is "a natural fit," said Joseph A. Trunfio, president of Atlantic Health System, which is headquartered in Morristown.

ss to more specialists, along with access to clinical trials, said Jason Coe, president of Hackettstown Medical. Atlantic Health owns hospitals in neighboring Morristown and Newton, among others.

The hospital had been owned by Adventist Healthcare, which announced last year it was looking for a partner to help sustain it. Adventist owns and operates hospitals in the Washington, DC and suburban Maryland area. Hackettstown was its only New Jersey facility.
