At Centennial College, do I have to purchase every textbook for Practical Nursing?

Published

I'm going into my first year of Practical Nursing (Flexible). I want to know if anyone who has been in the program, do you use every textbook on the list they give you? Where did you purchase your textbooks?

They say to purchase most at the Centennial Bookstore but I have found them cheaper somewhere else.

I would appreciate someone to answer who is or was in the Practical Nursing program!

And, I am new to this site so forgive me if I made any mistakes!

I am starting the regular program in September and I have been wondering the same thing. The way I look at it (I am basing this off the assumption that we have the same books, if I am wrong I am sorry!) buying the following books can wait:

Becoming a Master Student, Writing for Canadian Health Professionals, and Test Success: Test Taking Techniques for Beginning Nursing Students.

I am not saying that these books are useless, but they seem more like tools to help you succeed rather than books your teachers would assign work from. With the book store being on campus I would wait to see if these books will even be necessary. I am sure one of your classmates would let you look through their book and you can decide if you want to bother with it.

I am not planning to buy "Writing for Canadian Health Professionals" at all. It is only used for PNUR 103 in my program, and it says I can pick between that and "Becoming a Master Student". Even though "Writing for Canadian Health Professionals"($50.25) is significantly cheaper than "Becoming a Master Student" ($135.50) it is not worth buying because "Becoming a Master Student" is also on the book list for PNUR 105 making it the more useful buy. The fact that you can pick between these two books makes me believe that neither of them is really necessary for PNUR 103.

I hope someone that is already finished first semester answers you but if not I hope my opinion helps !

EDIT: You also asked where we bought our books. I ordered a few of mine off of amazon (I am pretty sure new) for significantly cheaper.

Understanding Human Anatomy and Physiology $ 152.90 compared to 201.25 in the bookstore.

Calculating Drug Dosages. An Interactive Approach to Learning Nursing Math. $47.57 compared to 58.50 in bookstore.

Test Success: Test-taking Techniques for Beginning Nursing Students. $36.58 compared to 42.25 in the bookstore

Mosby Medical Dictionary $45.55 compared to 49.25 in bookstore

You can also get free shipping on these items since you are spending over 50 dollars collectively. Just make sure you get the right editions and such. I just kept switching tabs between the bookstore and Amazon so I could check everything.

Happy Book Hunting ! ;)
