Aspiring wound care nurse suggestions?

Specializes in Harm Reduction/Public Health. Has 1 years experience.

Ill be graduating from a BSN program this June and want to get into wound care nursing. I am a necrotizing fasciitis survivor myself and have been extremely interested in complex wound care/management (one of my big motivators of going into nursing).

What suggestions do you have for get more experience within this area, such as types of jobs, certification programs, etc?

Become a Certified Wound Ostomy Continence Nurse (CWOCN), you'll have to have some nursing experience first though (2 years, I think) before applying. On site education takes 2 months then you have to take 3 tests. You can do it online and I think it takes 6 months (maybe?) and you have to find a preceptor for clinical hours, then take the tests. Check out their website Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing Certification Board

However, you can obtain a certification that only takes about a week to earn - Wound Care Certified (WCC), check out Wound Care Education Institute

There's also Certified Wound Specialist, but I don't have information handy on that certification.

I'd just do a simple google search and see what appeals to you the most. Good luck!
