Asking questions about Leadership

Published

Hi everyone,

My name is Mary and I am in my last year of registered nursing school.

For one of my assignments I am required to interview a nurse who is a leader.

These are the questions that I need to have answers that are based on your opinion.

Do you see yourself as a leader?

Tell me about your path to leadership?

How do you lead?

Tell me about your leadership style?

How has your leadership changed?

Do you notice any current issues for leaders such as power issues, gender issues, role issues, technology challenges, political knowing, activism and emotional intelligence

How did you learn to be a leader?

Who are your leader role models?

How do you see what nursing leadership will be required for the future?

What skills do you think I will need for the future to be a good nurse and a good leader?

Thank you so much!!

Sincerely,

Mary

Do you see yourself as a leader? Not really.

Tell me about your path to leadership? I worked as a floor nurse for several years before being offered a nursing supervisory position. I rejected the offer the first couple of times, but finally decided to accept during the late part of last year.

How do you lead? I would say that I have a situational style of leadership. In other words, the manner in which I lead is dependent on a particular situation that might be happening at that point in time. I can also be a Laissez-Faire leader, which is the hands-off style of leading.

Tell me about your leadership style? See the aforementioned response.

How has your leadership changed? I'm more assertive now than ever before. My boundaries are fortified, whereas they were weak several years ago.

Do you notice any current issues for leaders such as power issues, gender issues, role issues, technology challenges, political knowing, activism and emotional intelligenceThe current issue that leaders must address is the overage or surplus of new grads, many of whom cannot find their first jobs. In addition, emotional intelligence is an issue.

Nurses with good interpersonal skills seem to maintain steady employment, even if they might perform hands-on procedural skills terribly. Meanwhile, nurses with poor social skills are often fired or forced to resign, even if their hands-on skills are excellent.

How did you learn to be a leader? I learned to become a leader through the School of Hard Knocks (a.k.a. life's humbling experiences).

Who are your leader role models? I have no role models inside our outside the nursing profession. I don't really strive to emulate other nurse leaders.

How do you see what nursing leadership will be required for the future? Nursing leadership will require the following aspects: superb communication, excellent interpersonal skills, sound judgment, technological savvy, formal nursing knowledge, and the ability to de-escalate volatile situations with patients and family members.

What skills do you think I will need for the future to be a good nurse and a good leader? See the aforementioned response and all of the attributes that I have listed.

I'm surprised TheCommuter gave you those responses! Usually we tell people the same thing- this assignment is an INTERVIEW. You have no way of verifying that anyone here is actually a RN, and I doubt that your instructors gave you this assignment to post it on social media so you can copy and paste the answers. Part of the assignment is actually INTERVIEWING a nurse. So, get in touch with someone where you've been doing clinicals, or another nurse you know, and sit down with them over coffee and interview them.

LOL. :)

Thank you so much!! :D

Your answers will definitely help me write my paper.

You are 100% percent right. However, I wanted to use multiple forms of interviews to write my paper. I already have two telephone interviews of individuals that I am certain of their nursing occupation and three face-to-face interviews of cite lead nurses. I truly just want to learn as much as I can from who every I can, nurses or not, if I choose to put the information in my paper or not, I am still learning from other's experiences. :)

Thank you so much for you comment
