Hello,
I'm a pre-nursing student due to start my prereqs in August. Before I do, I wanted to make sure that being a nurse is something that I really can handle...if my dreams of being a nurse is realistic.
For those who have graduated and now working as nurses--is being a nurse as good, better or worse than you thought it would be and why?

Depends on the job. I have had nursing jobs which I hated, loathed, detested, etc. (too stressful, too boring, bad shift, lousy slacker co-workers, lame supervisors, jerk doctors, low pay, horrid stress, too much to do, too much time on feet, risking license every day at work, bad benefits). But after 5 years in the field I found my niche and feel this is what I was meant to do!

Like the previous poster said, I think it really varies. I was fortunate enough to get a great job at a great hospital right after graduation in OB (the area I wanted). For the most part we are staffed appropriately, there aren't cliques (there was where I did my preceptorship), and we serve a wonderful population in the city we're in. I think being a nurse can be a wonderful thing or a horrible thing. There are a lot of factors that impact the field. Good luck to you!

As good as. I didn't have great expectations going in, nursing is a temporary and practical move for me.
