That is what I thought. I think the class size is around 140. I have a friend who is a proff at UAMS she teaches the summer class and she didn't know anything either. I think my GPA will be okay it dropped from a 3.6 to a 3.5, oh well crap happens. I am from Ar where did you go to school? I went to NPHS in Jax graduated in 92. We may know some of the same peeps. Good luck to us!!!! TTYS

I have a friend who started there last summer and she has people in her class who had a GPA of 2.5, so it sounds like last year they accepted everyone with a 2.5 and above.

The AF keeps moving us...Everytime I think we are going to be at a place for a while, we get orders. SOOOO this time hahaha My husband and I only have two more years of being told were we can live which means I CAN COMPLETE a program YAY!!! I wish us all luck, if we get in we can all be crazy nursing students together!!!!!!!

I have applied to UALR and UAMS. I'll probably go to UALR if I'm accepted to both. It is much cheaper, and they have an accelerated program that lets you shave a semester off, but it is only an associates program.

okay so what is your real name (lol)? are you sure that is what you want to do? the reason i know i want my bsn is because i am going to go on and get my masters. i don't think i want to be bedside my whole career. i have several friends who are nurses at least eight close friends probably half/half associates/bachelors. the ones who have their associates regret not going on and getting their bachelors because once you start making the good money it is hard to stop and go back to school. plus they can’t go into management or pharmaceutical sales (which is what my sister does wks 4 merck and they won’t even interview someone without a bachelors)…..i hope i don’t sound like i am preaching i just want you to think about it. another complaint i hear is that they all feel burned out and some haven’t even been a nurse for 10 years. someone once told me the average lifespan of a nursing career was 20 yrs, now weather that is true or not i don’t know?! oh and i thought i read that ualr was trying to implement a bsn program because of ar nursing shortage? have you heard that? oh and my name is dawn in case i didn’t tell ya. hope to talk soon.

Hi Dawn,

I'm Carol Ann. I am planning on going pretty much directly to UAMS and getting a masters as soon as I finish the associates. I already have a bachelors (in business) so I can go directly into the masters program (I do have to have 3 courses as a pre-req to the masters, though). Before you can take any of the masters courses with clinicals you have to have 1000 hours RN experience so I figure I'll be starting on that. Anyway, that is my plan. Thanks for your advice, but the money difference is just too important right now. I think I calculated UAMS is about 17000-18000 and UALR about 10000. I'm going yo have to be using private loans and so I need to try and borrow as little as possible.

Oh, UALR has started a RN to BSN program that is all on line. It seems strange that they offer the associates and then the bridge program but at least for now that is the way it is set up.

Hi, Carol Ann

It is so nice to talk to you. That is awesome that you already have your bachelors, now what kind of pre-req’s would they need you to take?! That is so silly, and just a way for them to make more money off of you. Well, I certainly understand the financial reasons and it seems you have it planned out good!! Have you thought about the nursing debt forgiveness program through UAMS? One of my friends did that, she had to sign a contract saying she would work for them two years after graduation, but she didn’t have to pay anything for her school. I don’t think they pay very well during those two years though. What did you get your bachelors in? As much as I have enjoyed school I am really ready to be done. I feel like I have just been spinning my wheels and getting nowhere. Do you know when you will hear something from UALR? TTYS (talk 2 u soon). J Dawn

Carol Ann,

What kind of Bachelors in business? I didn't put that in my last post sorry. My sister has a degree in business management, and I was just curious what yours was in.

Dawn,

I have a BBA in acounting and an MBA also. I worked in accounting for about 12 years and have also taught high school math for 5 years and some other stuff in between (I'm old ). I've always wanted to be a nurse, though. I figured it is now or never.

I think we will hear from both places around spring break (2nd or 3rd week in March). I have thought about the UAMS scholarship and may look into it. I'll probably work there because one of the benefits is 90% off tuition so the masters should be cheap.

Carol Ann,

You are not even close to OLD!! Silly! SO, you will be going after your 2nd masters?! I think that is soooo wonderful and I admire you for it!! I didn't appreciate school when I was younger but now I really enjoy it. Okay so how do you feel about teaching Math? I could NEVER do that, kids these days are sooooo BAD (I have a 13yrs old) I would be afraid of laying my hands on one of them. LOL... but I think accounting would be a neat occupation. My husband is going to go to school to become a teacher after he retires from the AF in a couple of years. He really loves history and would like to teach it. Is it hard for new teachers to find a job in AR? Here in Ft. Walton Beach Fl. it is very difficult and they keep laying teachers off. I was just curious. TTYS

Dawn,

I like teaching, just not the discipline part of it. Someday I will probably teach in nursing school. I think how hard it is to get teaching jobs depends on the area. A lot of time new teachers may have to take a job at a school they don't want, or teaching classes they don't want just to get started and then they can change as they get some experience. I do think (not trying to stir up a debate here) that men teachers can find a job easier. A lot of schools really value men teachers and there are not near as many of them.

Yes, I wll be going for a second masters and I would like to get a doctorate someday. If I won the lottery I would just take classes for the rest of my life!!
