NAU Accelerated BSN Program 2016

U.S.A. Arizona

Published

Hi all -

I didn't see a thread for this program for the upcoming summer 2016 start date, so I thought I would start one. Please let me know if there is already a thread on this and I will have this deleted.

Who else is applying? I know last year was very competitive, so I doubt this year will be any different. I just took the Kaplan Admissions Exam and have finished all my prerequisite coursework, so I'm hoping for the best. Good luck to everyone!

Specializes in L&D, Trauma, Ortho, Med/Surg.

I assume that the Accelerated BSN progam is a separate program than the Maricopa CEP programs..?

Yes, I believe so. The accelerated program at NAU is only offered at the Flagstaff Mountain campus as far as I know. Summer, Fall, and Spring 3-semester program, beginning in Summer 2016.

Hi! I have been looking for a thread on this topic for a while and was going to start one too if I didn't find anything yet. Glad you decided to start one! I have finished all my prereqs & sent in my application yesterday but am not taking the Kaplan til next week. What did you think of it? Have you taken the TEAS by chance? I have-- so I've been trying to find any sort of comparison between the two but haven't heard anything to that extent yet. Anyway, good luck to you and everyone else too! Butterflies have taken over my tummy already ;)

Hey kelts118,

I didn't take the TEAS, but I didn't think the Kaplan was all that bad. The book (as a lot of people suggest on here) doesn't prepare you very well for the exam. The exam isn't that tough as far as standardized tests go though, in my opinion. Math had very basic questions (lots of fractions and percentages), reading comprehension is about what you'd expect and similar to the study book (but easier passages in my experience), writing was a little bit tricky, and science felt a bit like a lottery since they can ask you a variety of things within each of the 10 sub-categories they give you. Of all the places I looked, oddly enough Quizlet had some decent stuff for the writing section:

In addition to that, brush up on Anatomy and Physiology and you should be fine!

Altius,

Thanks so much! I appreciate the pointers. I don't usually get test anxiety too bad, but this one is definitely doin it for me! Got a lot riding on it, as I'm sure we all do. Quizlet can be a Godsend sometimes-- I'll definitely study that link. Thank you! What did you find particularly tricky about the writing section? I guess what I'm wondering is, was it significantly different than what you'd expect to see on the writing section of a typical standardized test? Or more along the lines of, like-- you just felt the questions were designed to throw people off?

Thanks again for responding! Hopefully we get some more people posting on here soon and we end up hearing from/seeing a lot more of each other over the next year :)

That actually was one nice aspect of the Kaplan - there didn't seem to be many "trick" questions where they were deliberately trying to get you to pick a wrong answer. What I was getting at was more of what I had read in another thread on here about the Kaplan - lots of questions asking where a given paragraph would best fit in the passage, which sentence could be removed from the passage, etc. A lot of those types of questions felt a little bit subjective. Its probably just more that at this stage we should know how to read and write, but I haven't been tested on the conceptual aspects of writing in a long time! Identifying different types of verbs, participles, gerunds, and nouns took some re-learning, but definitely not earth-shattering stuff. Good luck on the test!

I totally hear you! I feel like English/writing is one of those subjects we've been doing for so long that even those of us who are probably proficient at doing it still have a hard time articulating the reasons WHY. Like you said, we haven't been expected to explain the technical aspects of writing in SO long!

I'm glad you mentioned the Kap Writing being tough because I just took a practice test for the TEAS and it definitely brought up some more things I need to brush up on in that section. I'm taking the TEAS again on Tuesday and then Kap Friday morning. Hoping Tuesday will be a good "warm up" for the Kap since this program is ultimately my top choice!

Anyway, thanks for your two cents & for the "good luck". Congratulations on getting everything done! I'm sure that feels awesome and (I could be wrong BUT) you don't seem overly anxious. So I'm gonna go on a limb and guess you probably did pretty well?!;) Lol even so, wishing you all the luck!! Hope we hear back on decisions quickly.:)

Hey guys! I just applied too. I am a re-applicant, who is the most nervous I'll ever be over the next few months. Ohhhh man. I sure wished they'd post the Kaplan and GPA average on their website so I had the slightest idea how confident I should be. Good luck guys!

Hey kflo55! Have you tried asking any of the advisors? They might not be able to give an average for our exact cycle but I think they can give you an idea as to what scores have generally been competitive in past cycles. A former student told me that most of her cohort applied with GPA 3.8ish or above and high 80s-90s on the kaplan. Bu with only 30 spots in the program, I'm pretty sure this will be a painfully long 6-8 weeks no matter what they tell us! :whistling: Good luck to you too... wishing the best for everyone!

I have in the past. ------------ said that an average GPA of accepted students is usually over a 3.6. I am a bit discouraged about this, because I am just at that. And, my Kaplan score was high 80s. None of this is making me too comfortable. I just can't imagine not getting in again, it is so hard to endure a year of waiting...

I took the TEAS and the Kaplan and I would definitely say the Kaplan is easier! I would focus mostly on the science portion for the Kaplan. Also you guys could also apply to ASU if you're in Phoenix. That's where I was accepted to and I just started last week!
