Arizona/Maricopa CEP requirements

Updated:   Published

Hi! I am currently taking my pre/coreqs to apply to the CEP program next January and was curious if anyone knows whether they take a full cumulative GPA for application or if they only take the GPA of your pre/coreqs?

I was recently at the information session and I'm pretty sure they are just looking for the GPA of the pre and co-reqs that they are looking at.

Hi there, if you go to the maricopa nursing website and view the CEP information session it will help you find a lot of important information.

Currently they use these courses to calculate your GPA:

- First Year Composition (ENG 101 & ENG 102 or ENG 107 & ENG 108)

- Chemistry (CHM 130, CHM 130LL) or one year high school chemistry (high school chemistry not accepted by ASU)

- College Mathematics (MAT 140 or higher)

- Introduction to Psychology (PSY 101)

-Human Anatomy & Physiology I and II (BIO 201; BIO 202)

- Microbiology (BIO 205)

This forum is very informative. Few questions

1. Is there a way to accelerate through these pre-req's ? How long does these typically take to complete( 2 or 3 per semester?)?

2. Is there a way to take these pre-req's privately and attend an exam or have to attend the classes ?

3. Was there a wait time once you are ready to apply and when folks are accepted in to program ?

Hi there, to answer your questions:

1. There is not an accelerated way to get through these pre-reqs. I listed the order similar to how I finished them. This is the order I would personally suggest. Semester 1 should be fairly easy, semester 3 is the most difficult, many nursing students I know took micro and A&P 2 together, it's interesting material, just lots of study time. This is just a guideline I'd personally recommend, and it allows for you to be done in 3 semesters. If you crammed your semesters into 2 you'd most likely suffer with maintaining good grades, which well then hurt your chances of getting accepted. You can take some of these over summer as well to speed the process.

Semester 1 :

  • ENG101 - English (3 credits)
  • CRE101 - Critical Reading/Thinking - (most test exempt and don't need to take this class) (3 credits)
  • CHM130/CHM130LL - Chemistry + Lab (4 credits) they take high school chem if you have taken it within the last few years, unless you plan on going to ASU it requires college level chem
  • College Mathematics - MAT140 or higher (4 credits)

Semester 2 :

  • English 102 (3 credits)
  • PSY101 - Psychology (3 credits)
  • BIO201 - Anatomy & Physiology + Lab (4 credits)

Semester 3 :

  • BIO202 Anatomy & Physiology 2 (4 credits)
  • BIO205 Microbiology + Lab (4 credits)
  • Humanities elective (2 credits)

2. Maricopa community colleges will take most credits from other colleges and universities. You cannot take these privately, you must be in-class or do online. However, you will take a reading comprehension test that will determine if you have to take CRE101 or not.

3. Once you've finished your prerequisites, taken your HESI, and have obtained your fingerprint clearance card you can then apply to nursing school and then the CEP program. There are application deadlines listed on Maricopa's Nursing CEP page. If you have good grades (As and Bs) and did well on the HESI you should have little to no problem getting in on the first shot.

Hope this helps!

Goodluck!

Thank you very much. This is very informative. Just to get in to more details. I have Bachelors in engineering degree already but it is international degree. Not done in US and the high school was done 15 years ago, international as well. How do they give credits to some courses like Math and english ?

Re: My comment to speed through is I guess pre-reqs are required to apply for nursing program ( after semester 2 one is technically eligible to apply)and there is a wait time based on school. Hence checking to see what can be done online vs. waiting for Jan 2019 for classes to open up and be able to fit in to application deadlines.

I'm not sure how degrees transfer internationally. I'd recommend scheduling an appointment with an advisor at your community college of choice. But yes, you can apply to the regular nursing program once you have finished your second semester and have completed your HESI. However that usually has a waitlist of 2 years, so many apply to the CEP program after the have finished their third semester of prereqs. CEP has no waitlist so most people apply for that.

There still may be late start online classes you can begin this year at your community college if you want to get a head start. These classes are accelerated and go from October to December and last 8 weeks. I'd highly recommend talking to an advisor, they'll be able to create a schedule and a plan that will work best for you! Hope this helps ?
