Areas of Nursing where would I work as a new Nurse?

Published

I'm starting nursing school next year I went around the hospital with a nurse as a kid years ago and since then it's what I knew was right for me. I'm wondering what areas of do new nurses usually work in?? and do different areas pay differently? I'm thinking of becoming and emergency room or labor and delivery nurse.

My take on this is likely different than most. I'll be happy to work anywhere I can be useful, and feel I'm doing smth. worthwhile.

Here's a very generic but true answer you will get used to in the future: it depends. There is no set area new grads work.

Yes, as a new grad you will most likely take whatever job is offered, but because you are feeling "useful" and fulfilled. Just you wait! I wish I could insert an evil laugh.

Sam--

Insert evil laugh.

I'll deal with it when I have the experience or knowledge to do so.

If you want to get a job in the hospital as a new grad, you should really consider becoming a CNA or PCA or whatever they call the aides at your local hospital. Having connections is of the utmost importance. Passing the nclex will make you a RN, but it won't necessarily get you a job. You will see first hand that the classmates who have jobs waiting for them are 99% already working as aides. Don't listen to those who tell you not to work while in nursing school. That's horrible advice. New grad RNs with no pt care experience are dime-a-dozen. Don't be one of them.

Specialty jobs- especially in coveted specialties like ER and L&D- can be hard to come by as a new grad. I started in a specialty right out of school but I had an in because I'd done 2 clinicals on my floor. I agree to try to work as a CNA during nursing school... the new grads who get the jobs of their choosing are all ones with inside connections, at least in my experience.

You vill vork anyvhere you can find a position, and...you VILL like it! Achtung!
