Are you part of any nursing organizations? If so which one's are you part of and do you find them very valuable in your career?

I am in the process of joining the Academy of MedSurg Nurses (AMSN). I plan to sit for their certification exam in October.

I have toiled over which organization to join as I am interested in advancing nursing as far as my voice can take it. I am NOT happy with the ANA and think they really need to get it together. I really felt like the AMSN was focused in a direction that is important to me and seem to be addressing issues that are important to me. From my perspective, the ANA no longer represents the actual true to life bedside RN. They are way to focused on all there big degree nurses working on capital hill to advance the plight of advance practice nurses. That is fine for them, I want to be a part of an organization that is grass roots and cares about the issues that are important to me as a bedside RN.

NSNA as student. Been active with ANA/PSNA since graduating in 1982.

The nurses I've met there are passionate about the profession of nursing. Networking with a district RN landed my first homecare position.

Community member of Sigma Theta Tau but have stopred attending meetings.

Participated in SEPA/AACN in 80's to early 90's---attended their conferences along with Critical Care Medicine in Vegas each year.

All of these activities have helped me become a well rounded RN with strong clinical background and an expert in homecare with worldwide connections.

I am a member of the American Association of Diabetes Educators. I am also an active board member in the Southeastern Wisconsin Association of Diabetes Educators. I also am an active member in the Diabetes Educators Society. Do I find them useful? DEFINITELY. I'm always learning something new, and learning new ways to practice.

Are you a CDE if I may ask? I am very interested in opportunities for Certified Diabetic Educators. I'm a nurse with almost a year med/surg experience and would like to know more. I know you have to get tons of hours teaching diabetes but I'm not sure how you document that.

I'm a member of NANN (National Association of Neonatal Nurses) and ANN (Academy of Neonatal Nursing).

Both publish excellent journals and have very good national conferences each year and have CEUs to offer. ANN members can purchase several wonderful neonatal nursing books at reduced prices. NANN publishes lots of practice guidelines which are absolutely wonderful. NANN is the original neonatal nursing organization (over 20 years) and ANN has been around for about 4 years.

I find both organizations work toward helping members offer the best practice possible through ongoing education and research. I love them both.

I have my RNC in Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing from NCC (National Certification Corporation... a highly focused maternal-child nursing certification organization) and maintain my certification as required. I fully believe in obtaining certification in my field because passing the tough test gave me confidence in my knowledge and on my resume it shows that I'm a self-starter who is passionate about furthering my career.

I am a member of Association of Camp Nurses http://www.campnurse.org. We get newsletters and they have confernces, in the midwest mostly, too far for me. We also have a website to network with other camp nurses which is helpful.

i am a member of the Oncology Nurse Society, they are a integral part of my continuing education in the field of Oncology, and am a member of my local ONS chapter also, we have monthly dinner/meetings where we update ourselves on various pharmeceuticals related to oncology.
