Application to the AF

Published

Hi All,

I am in the process of applying to the AF to become a Nurse Officer. I am working on the two-page questionnaire and would like some advice informati nthat I could include. The questions include those, such as What are your short-term goals? Long-term goals? Why should you be selected? What do you have to offer the AF? etc.

Thank you all!

Jenn

Well, start by thinking why do you want to be in the AF? What do YOU have that THEY want? If you were to get in (because this is how they're looking for those questions to be answered), what would you want to do? Make a career of it? Advance your education? Where do you see yourself this time next year? In five years? Twenty years?

Remember - this calls for a bit of, ahem, tailoring of answers. Make them AF oriented and AF friendly. TELL THEM WHY you want the job.

Tell us what you have so far.... maybe we can help make it stronger. We've fill those out, but it really is personal. Be more specific in your question.

Specializes in ICU, PACU.

to answer the questions about short term/long term goals something you might want to consider including in your answers are educational advancement. if you just graduated or work on a med/surg floor think about advancement to icu or er or becoming a nurse practitioner. if you already work in icu or er, grad school is great to mention or ccatt or flight nursing. they want to see you have goals to advance your professional career and that you are motivated to learn new things.

for the question "what do you have to offer the air force" think about all of the good qualities you have that make you a good nurse and don't forget to include all of the qualities that make you a good person outside of your job too. this question is the part where you get to shine. really play up all of the positive things about yourself.

these questions are very important so spend some time answering them honestly but still highlighting you best qualities. have a couple different people that you trust read your answers and let them give you feedback. when you go for your chief nurse interview, he or she will have already read your answers to these questions and will use your answers to get a feel for the kind of person and the kind of nurse that you are. so essentially these questions are the first impression the interviewing chief nurse has of you. so keep a positive attitude in your answers and be honest. hope this helps. good luck.

Also - do a bit of research into the Air Force Core Values - integrity, service before self, and excellence in all we do. These are HUGE buzzwords; incorporate these values into your answers.

The Air Force Mission is To Fly, Fight, and Win in Air, Space, and Cyberspace. Think about how supporting this mission as a nurse is important, and think about what types of qualities it takes to do that.

They're looking for all this stuff in your answers, and including it will boost your presentation going into the interview.
