Anyone work as a Unit Secretary while going to Nursing school?

Published

I was thinking of trying to get a job as a Unit Secretary at my local hospital on the night shift (7p-7a) and was wondering if anyone here has worked as a US? How about during nursing school?

Yes, I do. I work as a US on a spinal/neurology floor, working alternate weekends. Before becoming a nursing student I worked part time as a US during university. I did my job but at point in my life had no interest in nursing. Now that I will be a nurse, my job is a wonderful tool for getting a front row view as to what floor nurses do and deal with each shift.

]I also plan on trying to get a job as a unit secretary OR a cna on the floor that I want to work when I become a nurse, but I'll take anywhere lol

I got a US job during my last semester, served me well in getting to know the nurses and docs, and ended up getting me my nursing job 3 months before graduation :D AND it's a big help on those low census nights because if they are short a US they'll put me on the desk instead of calling me off which is always a good thing

]That's awesome :] That's my other plan if I can't get certified yet (conflicting schedule for the classes.) So glad to hear that it has helped you out!

I'm a unit secretary in an ICU. I work weekends during the NOC shift. I've just finished my first semester of an RN program and I haven't had any issues with working and going to school. I only work 24 hours a week though.
