To make a long story short, I started college at 15 through a PSEO program w/ my highschool. I got in through a placement exam (the COMPASS). At that time I followed some bad advice to not even bother taking my ACT's because if I ever wanted to further my education I could do so as a transfer student and wouldn't need ACT scores. So here I am at almost 26 needing to take my ACT's to be admitted to the nursing program. I just need a 20 or above but I also want to apply for quite a bit of scholarships which all ask for ACT scores so I want to do as well as I can. I haven't had a math class in over 10 years!
Did anyone take their ACT's as an adult? Any good study material recommendations you could give me? Thanks!

ACT? Since when is the SAT or ACT required for non-traditional students?
Well, I know at both the CC and the 4 year school I am talking to, both require ACT or SAT scores for entrance into the nursing program (or any health technologies program) no matter what path you took to get there. Maybe it's just these schools? I just know that is what they told me.

I've got one for ya....
Took the ACT for the first time in 6th grade. Took it every year after that through ninth grade, at which point I scored well enough to get a full ride my senior year. Took it again anyway as a senior just to see how I'd score. Had to take it again for ADN admission requirements at the age of 29...
So the first time I took it, the kids I was in there taking it with the last time weren't even born yet! Talk about feeling old!
There are plenty of Dummies kind of books you can get...the highest the math gets is basic trig. I also reviewed the basic formulas for area/circumference etc. of geometrical figures. Keep in mind that you can use a calculator now. I actually ended up with a composite score one point higher than the last time I took it.

I took my ACT again after being out of high school for 21 years. I knew the English and the Reading parts would come easy to me but was concerned about the Math and Science. I printed the sample test off the ACT website and that was the only thing I did to prepare for it. I aced the English and Reading but the Math and Science, I didn't know a single thing, had to guess at every question. I managed to do ok with my guessing. Made a 20 which was good enough for me because all I needed to apply for nursing school was an 18 and a 20 gets me a full tuition scholarship at my local community college, so if I get accepted, I'm all set except for books and supplies.

Im not much help because I (like you) were advised not to take the ACT as the COMPASS was enough to finish the LPN program at the community college I attend now.. I hope I dont have to take it when I head on to my 4 year school for the BA portion! Im gonna call them..
If it was me I would definately be buying up the resource materials that are offered. Im sure there are Dummies books (as said above) and study guides similar to the NCLEX ones.. Using the practice tests on the website is good idea too, you can kind of guage the intesity of the material off of it.
Good luck though! And thanks for bringing this to light, or it may have happened to me too!

Took mine this past September for one of the programs here in TN. I scored a 23! They only go by grade in A&P I and ACT. My last time to take it was 16 years ago in high school. I used the "Real ACT Study Guide" book. It is written by the writers of the ACT. It also has 3 retired tests. Also I needed to brush up on my geometry, so I bought a condensed study guide for that.
