I have decided to take some time off from my FT position here and work as a sub. So I will definitely have time to study to take the National School Nurse's exam. Curious to hear from anyone who has taken it in the last year or so, what it was like, compared to what you see in real life day to day?

I haven't taken it yet, looking to do so next summer (2020); I think NBCSN has a handbook that has resources.
When I was preparing for NCLEX, a clinical instructor recommended Davis' Med Surg Success as a study guide, which I found to be absolutely superb and really covered everything that popped up on the NCLEX. They have a Pediatric Success book as well that may be helpful in prepping for the certification as well.
I'll certainly be following this thread to see what others have to say!!

I used the School Health Alert "School Nurse Resource Manual". It was a good "jumping point" as it lists common conditions with things to assess and interventions. Each condition listed also has an index of sources/other references.
Tell ya, though- it ain't cheap...

I read "School Nursing, A Comprehensive Text" by Janice Selekman. It's huge but I think 99% of my questions came from that book! The test was hard but I passed with flying colors!
Oh and keep receipts for everything like your books to study, practice tests you pay for, exam fee, mileage, etc because your county may reimburse you. Mine did!

I took it less than a year ago. I studied the School Nurse Certification Review book and I took a review class. The review class really just taught us how to study the book in sections. I passed on my first try so that must have been the right resources!

Thanks. I bought this book four years ago when I started this job so glad I already have it!

Just DON'T do what I did. I kept delaying the test because I scheduled it for June. And then July. And then end of July. Because I procrastinated! Make yourself a schedule and stick to it. Best of luck!!

Don't overthink trying to study, because the potential subjects on the test (from wee ones to high school) can cover anything from croup to STIs. Take it as soon as you're eligible, as there's a relatively high fail rate, and if you're on a deadline (due to your job requiring it) you want to leave enough time to retake it..
