Hello! I'm new to this site and will be starting school come fall. I found out in March that my work was doing massive layoffs and I'm on my last week of work now. I will be attending Antelope Valley college, doing my prereqs first, then apply for the RN program. I am extremely excited to start this new chapter in my life!
I would really love to go to school full time as I have 2 small children at home and don't want to be separated from them for too many hours and cannot afford daycare. Does anyone have experience with being able to collect unemployment while going to school? I know specific degrees/training is covered and they stated they will make exceptions if the career is considered in demand. I just wanted to know if my "ideal situation" is even possible.
Thank you for all your advice and information!

Hey! I completed all my prerequisites while on unemployment. Just do not report this to EDD because they would most likely not allow you to collect while going to nursing school. :)

Apply for California Training Benefits when you start unemployment. Do not lie to UI. They can and do find out. If they find out you can be required to repay them plus fines. I am in school on CBT. They are giving me 4 years of CBT to complete. The process sucks to get it started and you may have a delay in getting benefits, but in the end you get UI for the entirety of your program.
