Anyone an HUC or currently in or have completed HUC program?

Published

Hi,

I am interested in the HUC program at GWCC so I can get a job at a hospital while enduring "the wait". Has anyone completed the program or currently in the program? If so, what did you think? Were you able to find a job after completing the course? What was your starting pay?

Also, I will most likely be applying to the July 2009 Banner NF. For any currrent Banner employees who have been accepted or are in the BNF program, how are they with scheduling work around the school schedule? Is that even doable? Are they pretty flexible?

Any insight would be helpful! :D

Thanks!

hey! i am in the program with you right now (not sure who you are). i am also enduring "the wait". i am going to the info session tomorrow at gwcc to see about the banner fellow program and hope this will be my way into the nursing program. so far, the huc program is challenging, but not impossible. we are learning so much stuff that we will be able to use later on! that is what i like the most about it.

see you in class!

hi!

i am not actually in the class yet. i am looking into applying for the spring class at gwcc. have you already taken the hcc130 and med term courses? or, are you taking them with the huc courses? are you doing the 1 semester or 2 semester option? have you done any clinicals yet, or is it still classroom stuff? is it even doable in 1 semester if working full time? i am just trying to decide if i should do this or get my cna. the cna cert is cheaper..:chuckle.

i went to the bnfp info session in dec, but then, of course pre-req's changed. and then, bnfp required bio 202 prior to applying. i am going to miss the application date for march 2009 by 1 wk!:banghead: oh well, for sure am going to try for the july 2009 cohort. at this point, bnfp is one of the "shortcuts" to getting into the program earlier than normal. i just want to get started!

thanks for the reply,

Get your CNA instead. The direct patient care hours will be more useful, and will look better if you apply to BNF. Pay is pretty much the same as HUC. The experience with patients will help you during your nursing school clinicals.

i'm doing it all in one semester. i am taking the med term class, the hcc 130 class and the other classes needed for the huc program. it is alot. i don't know of anyone in my classes who is taking the same classes as me who works. i think a few people work that are in the program, but not alot of us. the program is really time consuming. i have a medical background, so it isn't as challenging for me, but it still takes up alot of my time. it is all classroom stuff so far-we don't start the clinical portion til november-thank goodness. this stuff is really tedious! if you need to work full time, it might be better to do the program in two semesters. alot of people in the program with me are doing that. or you can, like you said, go with the cna. either way you will learn alot of stuff that will help you alot when you go to nursing school.

i am going to the banner info session tomorrow. i have all my pre-req’s done and my net test done, i am just idling on the waiting list and i ready to get going. i am trying to get some volunteer opportunities going to help me more with getting the banner fellows. anything to get this over with! i can't stand the thought of waiting a year and a half to start nursing school!

any more questions, just ask! best of luck with everything!!!

laura,

thanks again for all the info and good luck to you too! gotta' just keep plugging along and eventually we'll get in. i just looked online today and there are currently 2054 applicants waiting for placement in the nursing program. did you know that scottsdale healthcare also has a program? you have to already be an employee though. but they hold, i think 40 spots, each semester for employees. it is also an accelerated program and they pay for school. getting a job though....that is the rub. one of the reasons i am looking at huc or cna, to get my foot in the door to get into one of these programs. just so frustrating!

thanks again,

rachael.

It is frustrating. I am just hoping that the HUC program will get me in to a hospital who will pay for my nursing school. I need all the help I can get!!!

Perhaps we will be in nursing school together? That would be cool! :)

Best of luck to you.

Oh thanks for the info I actually looked into that but since I had to have the CNA for the nursing program anyway might as well put it to use. Maybe get a little tuition assistance in the end.

I completed GWCC's HUC program last year. Graduated in May, got a job at SHC in June and was unexpectedly called up for my program a year early (radiography), so only actually worked as a HUC for 2 months. Starting pay for me was a little over $12 - I had 3 years' experience as an MA which they counted. Base pay was $11 something.

Good luck!
