Anyone going to NECC this fall?

Published

Hi - I know this thread is old, but I just discovered this forum! I'll be returning to NECC for my second year of the ADN program. Are you a new or returning student? Day or evening? Are you ready for school to begin in *gulp* 17 days (and counting....)??

How did you like your first year of clinical work? Were the professors helpful and informative. I was a previous nursing student at UMass Lowell and have had mixed feelings about some of the instructors. NECC is close to me and I have been deciding to apply for next year's class, either that or Radiologic Technology. I feel worthless in my current line of work and want to like going to work everyday, and this is an area I see myself in. Well anyways, good luck and have fun.

Hi - I liked my first year very much - I think it's a great program. Of course, I have nothing to compare it with, but I know NECC has a good reputation for quality instructors. I was at Anna Jaques, Merrimack Valley and Holy Family last year for clinicals- all Med-Surg floors. You should make an appointment with someone at the school to discuss your options. It's a difficult school to get into because they only accept 80 students per year (40 in the day program and 40 in the evening program). However, there are always a few that don't make it past the first or second semesters, and those slots fill right up again, so they must have some type of waiting list for students who have already taken one or two semesters somewhere else. Good luck!

Yeah, I have all of the prereq's completed with A's, my current GPA towards my finance degree is over a 3.9. I had completed a pediatrics and 1/2 or a maternity rotation and then just lost the passion for the job. I don't know if it was my current instructors or what, but many were surprised to see me leave with my high grades and open personality. It was a personal choice which I sometimes regret, but I realize I am still young and there is time to make a change.

Hmmm - well, if you truly lost your passion for becoming a nurse, then perhaps it was a wise choice. Or maybe you just weren't into maternity?! That is one great thing about nursing - there is a wealth of different areas to go into after graduation. You can be as close or as distant from actual patient care as you want. As you say, you are still very young, so there's no need to find your life's occupation right now. Try some different things out. Geez, I'm on my third career change! I enjoyed what I did previously, but I couldn't see myself doing it for the rest of my life. Healthcare is something completely new, and I'm having a great time with it.

Hi!!!!!!!!!

This is my first semester! I am SO nervous! I'm in the day program.

I'm SO afraid of not making it. Do you have any words of wisdom for me? Those people that you speak of that don't make it....What's their issue? It's just so hard to get into this program that I wonder what people are doing not to pass. It's taken me two years to get to this point and I would just DIE if I flunked out! Yikes!

Are you going nights or days?

Oh...and I am a returning student. I've done all my prereqs at NECC for the past 2 years. :)

Congratulations on getting in!! You should feel very proud of yourself for getting to this point. Aren't you sooo excited? I remember my first day as if it were yesterday... Don't worry about flunking out - this program isn't like some you read about on allnurses - where if you fail one test you get thrown out of the program.. they want you to succeed, and go out of their way to help - they would let you know way in advance if you were in academic or clinical trouble. We only lost one after the first semester, and two or three after second semester. Some schools you read about lose half their class or more! Anyway, you're in for an adventure! You won't believe how much you will learn this first year.

I'm in the evening program. Some advice..let me think...I guess I'd say try to keep up with the readings, but don't sweat it if you can't get all the reading done for the lecture class (definitely do the readings for labs, though!). Test questions came from our teachers lectures, so if she didn't mention it in lecture, we weren't tested on it. (Better make sure that's how whoever you have for lecture class does it) - I was weeks behind in the readings by the end of last semester! I finally did read it, though - you never know what they'll ask on the NCLEX! Also, definitely invest in a digital voice recorder to tape the lecture classes. Practice those lab skills - they do get easier the more you do them (I would go over the procedures in my head - over and over and over!):uhoh3: Try to hook up with someone else from your class early on - it is easier if you have someone to complain with, study with, gossip with, etc. Also - I know it sounds a little corny, but sign up for a mentor! They are great for asking questions, getting info, employment advise, plus they are great if you need references from working nurses (for a job).

Hope this helps - feel free to send me a personal message anytime. Good Luck!:D

I love you!!! Really, I do! You have no idea how much your words of wisdom (and encouragement) mean to me!

I am so, so excited. I took a few of my classes on the Lawrence campus last year and I remember all the "people with the blue shirts". :lol2: I was SOOO jealous of you guys....Now I am one of you! Really, it is quite an honor being accepted into this program....Now I just have to learn to hang and bang!:lol2: I don't work, but I have two young children at home (5 & 3) so it will be a challenge.....but a fun one. :) I haven NO medical experience at all so I might be behind the 8 ball a little bit. Did you find any of the NCLEX prep books to help you w/ your exams? If so, which one did you use?

I actually did sign up for a mentor and we have that Mentor Reception next Wednesday! I am so excited to meet my mentor....He or she will probably be not as excited to meet me because I tend to talk people's ear off.

Hey, you know, I found another NECC student on this board today (and I thought I was the only one). She's in nursing 3 now and is posting under Gigglesrn2b or something like that. She's super nice! Anyway, I don't know if she's in the day or night program but you probably know her. :)

Don't go too far....I might have another question up my sleeve. :lol2:

Oh, see! I knew I'd have another question.

How are the dosage calculation tests? Esp. the one in Nur101? Did anyone fail the course because of them? Do they do them in the beginning of the semester?

Oh, I love Math. :uhoh3:

Specializes in Adult and Pediatric Vascular Access, Paramedic.

Good luck to both of you, and if you have clinical in Lowell I'll see you around .

Sweetooth

Yay!

And how are you liking working as an RN? Is it as awesome as you thought it would be? :) You work in the ER, right?
