anyone ever taken ACCELERATED A&P??

Published

I just looked at my school's web site for a preview of the Spring 2004 classes to get a general idea of what times A&P 1 would be offered and all but 1 of the A&P is accelerated meaning that the 1st half of the semester is A&P 1 and the 2nd half of the semester is A&P 2. Has anyone ever taken A&P like that and did it kill you? I MUST get an A in A&P 1 to get into my ADN program (600+ applicants for 110 spots) and I was planning on taking JUST A&P 1 next semester since I will be working full time so that I can be sure I will have able time to get an A. Please share your experiences if you have taken A&P like this.

Thank you,

Amy

I had A&P I over half a summer session (5 weeks) - does that count? :)

I guess so....how did it go? Did it just about kill you and what kind of grade did you get?

Thanks!

Amy

I took A&P I & II over one summer. It was intense to say the least. A&P was pretty much all i did that summer. All day.. every day... I absolutely loved it so i think that made a huge difference. I enjoyed the intensity and total immersion. I liked being able to focus 100% on it and not have to worry about anything else. I dont think i would have done as well (or had as much fun) if i was taking a bunch of other classes at the same time. Right now i am the TA for anatomy in a class that is spread out thru the entire semester. The students in the class tell me that it is pretty demanding, but it seems to move along at a manageable pace. (of course they have other classes going on too.) I guess the point is that no matter how you take it, A&P is going to be a challenge. -Lorus

I did an accelerated A&PII. It was class for five hours three times a week for six weeks. It was 5-10PM Monday, Weds, and Friday--and I'm not much of a night person! It felt like all I did was A&P all the time for those six weeks. Every spare minute was spent studying or preparing. I got an A, but I was only working part-time. Friends working full time had a harder time keeping up.

My school also does a five hour/day three week A&P in the summer; I felt that would be too compressed for me.

I will be doing a six-week Micro next summer, and I'm not really looking forward to it, but it is good to get a class out of the way in a short time span.

hehehehehe...

I was in that summer A&P2 class Judith mentioned above....and yeah, it was all A&P, all the time....I work part time, but I also have two small kids--and I got an A.

That said, I actually kinda prefer these compressed courses. I find it easier to focus over a short period of time, even if you look back at it later and say "how on earth did I do that???" LOL.

:D Nice to see ya Judith!!!

My class was 2 1/2 hours, 4 days a week (lab) and 3 1/2 hours, 2 days a week (lecture). I got As in both, and I enjoyed focusing on one area intently in a short period of time as well.

The best advice I can give is that you absolutely cannot fall behind - you'll never be able to catch up. If you stay on top of the material you'll be fine. Good luck!

Intense. I took A&PII over a six week summer session. Four days a week, with lab. All I can say is that you'd better clear your schedule of just about everything else. It's that intense... at least if you want to shoot for an A or B.

Haven't taken the accelerated A&P, but will be taking the 3 week Microbiology course this summer. That should kick my butt all over the place!!! :D

Amy,

Where will you be taking A&P? Sounds as though we may be in the same boat. The one prereq I lack is A&P and I'll need to ace it to get the GPA I need for admission. And, I'll take it at night since I'm working during the day. See you at Northlake?

By the way, I've been looking at my wife's A&P book and.... I'M not brave enought to try an accelerated program. Since I need that "A" I'll play it safe and just do it the slow way.

YES!!!! I'm going to Northlake!!! I'm thinkning about playing it safe too..but it would be nice to get both classes under my belt. I just looked at the preview schedule online and unless they change it, they aren't offering A&P at night. Words of advise: If you must take A&P at night DO NOT TAKE IT AT BROOKHAVEN. The nursing adviser at Brookhaven specifically told me DO NOT take A&P 1, 2, or Micro at Brookhaven because they make it alot harder than it has to be. You know that's bad when the nursing adviser tells you this. Did you also know that Brookhaven will be offering a stand alone nursing program separate from El Centro? 1 of the advisers told me that since that is happening that North Lake will offer the ASN program with El Centro like Brookhaven use to. I have taken Science classes at both Northlake and Brookhaven and it's a world of difference in the instruction that you receive. Good luck.

amyindallas:

- Regarding an accellerated program over the summer while holding a full-time job.

- In order to get an A in A&P 101/102.

- You will need to study 3 to 4 hours EVERY day (in addition to note preparation & reading). Remember, you have both a lecture portion and a lab portion - so it's like two classes in one.

- I did a 10 week accelerated A&P 101 program this summer. I studied 3+ hours a day. I would study an hour in the AM, an hour over lunch, and an hour in the evenings. Also, I would study at the gym while riding the bike (but I did not count the bike study time into my daily study requirements).

- Next...I used my vacation days to study for exams. Would take 1 or 2 days off per exam. I get 3 weeks (15 days) vacation per year.

------------

- A&P 101 is a real bear. A&P 102 seems a whole lot easier. Case in point. I busted by rear-end off this summer for a 90.1% average (A). I am studying 2 - 3 hours a day for A&P 102 (granted it's a 15 week class as opposed to the 10 week accelerated summer class), and am sitting with a 99.99% (A). Only missed 1 question in 4 exams.

--------------

- To get your mind straight.

- You WILL do nothing but EAT/SLEEP/DRINK/THINK A&P. You will even try to study A&P at work. Forget about partying, or having any fun. My entire study group (we all got A's) spent the entire summer studying. No vacations, no parties, nothing. We even debated about watching 4th of July fireworks (which we did), as we had exams on the 5th.

-------------

- Can it be done? Yepper. But you going to have to bust some serious butt with these 5 week accelerated classes.

- I'd try to get a copy of the syllabus for A&P 101 and start hitting the books on the high level stuff.
