Anyone had clinicals with the VA??

Published

Anyone ever had clinicals with the VA either hospitals or clinics? We have a partnership for clinicals with them for this semester. Just wondering.

I did, and there's lots of paper work that needs to be filled out. Security everywhere, so strict bc you are taking care of veterans and we love and respect our vets.

Did you enjoy it? I'm so eager to get to clinicals. My hubs is military so I figured I would accept the challenge and I think I will enjoy it.

Specializes in Peds OR as RN, Peds ENT as NP.

I have had clinicals with the VA last Fall and this Spring. I liked it a lot. They pay nurses very well, and it may be easier for you to get a job with them when you graduate. If your area is peds or OB, might not give you that experience. :)

It's just like other hospitals except veterans are so much brave and they don't complain about everything, and very respectful. I am not saying this is true for all patients lol. You can make it fun even if it gets boring :)

The veterans are wonderful patients and very tolerant of the student nurses. Watch them though, they can be mischievous. The VA itself can be a hassle, they have people whose sole job is to make sure you follow protocol. Be sure to always wash hands entering and leaving a room and follow contact precautions when posted.

Thank you for the advice and experiences you have shared. I truly appreciate it! We only have some clinicals with them for this semester, I think we get to do a clinical in each area of specialty, or we at least get exposure to each. Its a long 3 year program. I can't wait! So excited!
