Any S.Florida EMT's here?

Published

I'm trying to get into the EMT cert program at MDC(only because I heard every other school offering the program is horrible) but there's SO much to do in order to even get into it. You have to take the CPT test, then get into the First Responder program which is 7 weeks long, then graduate that, then apply for the EMT program which is 200 hours, then graduate and finally take your test.

The program I looked at in Philly at a hospital had no pre-reqs other than an english/reading comprehension test and it's only 13 weeks long. The end. That sounds MUCH better but the class is full and wont start again until January. Since I'm still in Miami I was thinking about just doing it here at MDC but it seems it's going to take me longer here.

I just want to get into the field and work while in nursing school so that I can have some sort of experience in healthcare while going to school.

I know this is a Nursing forum but are there any EMTs here that went to MDC that possibly went into nursing??? Is it a good program? Are there any shorter programs at any other accredited schools?

Whats the job market like? I know the pay isn't great but it's something while I'm in school and as long as I have a job I can't complain. Now I WILL complain if I do this and CANT find a job! lol

give FMTI a try. they are accredited.(fmti.edu)

i would apply at AMR, Medics, Medivan, American Ambulance.. they are all ALWAYS hiring.. Driver starts out at like $8-9/hour, Driver/EMT- is like $10-12/hr i believe..

OK thanks!

FTMI is a good program? Will I be able to apply it towards a paramedic degree in the future or would I have to attendthe MDC EMT for that

yeah, they have FR, EMT-B, EMT-P etc etc... the instructors in coconut creek/coral springs are really cool too :)

I read bad reviews of that place. Its a good school?

What if I wanted to get my EMT b there and get my paramedic at Miami Dade CC? Would it count towards it?

as long as u have your emt-b you can go anywhere u want to do paramedic.

where did u read bad reviews? maybe its changed since 06-07

FMTI has a sketchy past. If you just want to do something medical related while in nursing school, why not just pick up a nurse intern job with a local hospital? That way you can make contacts in the hospital and feel out what area you would like to do when done with school.

As a paramedic who did nursing school while working FT 24/48 at a busy 911 station, I can tell you with certainty that the people who were nurse interns were better prepared in finding jobs after graduation than I was even though I may have had a bit more experience.....

Good luck regardless of what you choose.

I am an EMT that lives in the Port St Lucie area. Most of the emt positions are with fire and you have to be a paramedic. None of the counties up this way are hiring either. I graduate from Keiser University in West Palm Beach in December and there is no way that I could have worked and gone to school. Good luck with your schooling.

I'm an EMT-B and nurse. I did EMT-B in bewtween my second and third semester of nursing school. I loved it! I went to Palm Beach State College, the instructors were great. They have the highest pass rate for the state test in the state of florida. They have night and day classes at both of their campuses.

Man everything is so far from me. There really is nothing except Miami Dade college.

How hard would it be to work as a paramedic while going to NS?

Good Morning. I actually have 2 classmates that take the train from north Miami every day to class. I drive 60 miles each way. I did have 1 classmate that worked as a paramedic in an ER until second semester and then quit to focus on school. I think that the difference is that Keiser University's RN program is only 16 months, not 24, and we are in class or clinical 5 days a week. That makes it hard to work, but if you can try it. You have nothing to loose and can always quit. Don't give up. Have a great day. :yeah:

Thanks foe the reply! They take the train from north Miami to where? I didn't even know there was a train ! Ha! Oh man. This might actually work if I could get more info. I was looking into programs pretty far north anyway BC I'm DESPERATE to take the EMT course ASAP and all the classes around me are already full :(
