Any NICUs hiring..anywhere??

Specializes in NICU/Neonatal Step-Down.

Hey all,

I know I'm in the boat with a lot of other wonderful people, but im a new grad RN (passed boards last week) seeking NICU. I live in the metro Detroit area of Michigan, and all the NICUs here are packed to the brim. I cannot find any openings in peds or PICU either :( Unfortunately my house burned down in June and though its the hardest thing ive ever been through, it's left me with no ties to this state and its awful economy.

When i got into nursing school i had no clue what I wanted to do, all i knew i DID NOT want to do was NICU! Those tiny babies scared the ba-jeezus out of me. But then during my OB rotation, i shadowed in NICU and fell in love (I have shadowed in 3 other NICUs since). Im a NANN member and even went to the "Evidence vs. Experience in Neonatal Practices" 2 day conference in Chicago back in July. I know my heart belongs in NICU and that I want to help babies and thier famlies...Ive applied to atleast 35 or so jobs across the country and no bites yet.

Im willing to go ANYWHERE in the USA to get my foot in the door of NICU nursing...so does anyone know any NICUs in need of RNs? Or any advice on what I can do to make myself more appealing on paper for people far away?

Thanks for any info, and god bless all of you guys already in the NICU! :)

I think we are hiring @ St John Hospital in Detroit. If we aren't right this minute we do hire often. Have you applied here.

I actually went up to the NICU at St. Johns in person during my list clinical rotation (and shadowed there in OB), i did my Med-Surg 3 on 6 North (Onc/Hospice)

It couldnt hurt to go up there again though :) Maybe Monday I'll march up with a cover letter and resume. I dont see any postings online, only 1 job in PICU that requires 2-3 years exp. (I also went up to the peds unit in person)

Since im licensed now however and was not then, maybe I will get a different response!

Thank you for the input,Ill head up to St Johns after the weekend!

Try looking up all the children's hospitals in the U.S. You should be able to find something through there. Good luck!

I live in Oklahoma City. I want to be a NICU nurse as well and was just sifting through the job postings and 2 of the 3 hospitals websites I looked at were hiring and each had a couple openings. I'm already stressed about not being able to find anything when graduation rolls around in May, but it makes me feel hopeful to know that there are at least postings out there.

Remember to apply early! Like February...hospitals know that you don't graduate until late spring, but it gives you the jump on everyone else.

Try Children's Memorial Hermann in Houston

Just applied there for 2 positions, thank you!! :)

I just wanted to give you a bit of hope...I too am a new grad RN and went into nursing school knowing that I wanted to work in the NICU when I got out. Due to this HORRIBLE economy (I'm in California) No hospitals are hiring for any positions...new grads at least. I graduated in March and kept trying and just last week I finally got a job in the NICU at the hospital I really wanted to be at! It will happen for you!!! Don't give up! I have my fingers crossed for you future NICU nurse! ;)

valcar...

Which hospital are you at I am a new grad in CA that wants nothing more then to work NICU even though I have applied to all types of positions won't be happy until Im in NICU

I think I noticed that Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women and Babies in Orlando, FL might also have some opportunities. You might want to check with them also? They have a Level III NICU.

Children's Hospital of Philadelphia has a bunch of positions posted.
