Any Canadian nurses travel to the USA?

Published

I am a Canadian nurse looking into travel nursing in the USA. Anyone been through the process and have advice? I have 2 years experience as an RN on a surgical oncology floor. Thanks!

There are a few Canadian nurses posting that they are going through the process or are already working in the US. Have you sorted your nurse license out yet for the US?

No I haven't gone that far yet because it's still something I'm just thinking about. I really wanna hear from people who have done it before I commit! I have written NCLEX though

I started applying for my license through Texas last year ($125)... It was a long process but fairly easy in hindsight. Pick a state, fill out the paperwork... you'll need to get a criminal record check ($55) and do a CES ($550)through CGFNS... once they get all of your paperwork they will give you ATT (authorization to test) your NCLEX ($500), you make a date, write it, pass and then start applying for a Visascreen ($700) (again through CGFNS)... I may have got the prices slightly off, but you get the point. Once you have all of these things you can start applying for jobs.

This is where I am at... I am learning though that Texas doesn't really like first time travelers... They want you to have a SSN and a VISA, which you can't get without getting a job. SO ANNOYING.

SO, if anyone has tips from this point forward, I am interested to hear where you went from here. I think it may be possible to get longer contracts (6month-3yrs), I just am not willing to commit that long just yet..

Hope that helps!

That is really helpful thank you! I have already written and passed NCLEX so I guess thats one thing off my list. Thanks!
