I am also a black male nursing student (23) with 1 more year to go in an ADN program in Jersey. I also got an externship for the summer (either Tele or Ortho).

There's 2 or 3 more in nursing 1, and one that I know of in Nursing 4

I'm not a nurse, however I am a black male, and I 've done tons of research into the field, and I plan on pursuing the full level of education that a nurse can receive(DNP/ PHD) (a recent career change due to medical reasons will allow for full time study)During my due diligence, and reseaching a few local progams I ran into one male black that was enrolled in a MSN RN program for individuals that I have already obtained an undergrad degree in another field....He stated that he was one of 5 other Black Males in the program....now my city is 62 % black so this is most likely the cause of the high number of black male participants...... I have read, and as someone mentioned previously only about 6% of males occupy the field of nursing ......and 1 percent of that percentage are African American Males.So... 1% is a percentage, however small. I'm proud of all of the people that chose nursing however I have a special consideration for Black Males....maybe because I"m one...lol....On a side note...this is a great forum with great information that I commonly double check and have yet to be disappointed.... Thanks to all of the health care professionals here regradless of your level....BIG UPS (or great job if you don't COMPRENDE) to all the CNA's LPN's RN's and APRN's. You guys and gals have a tough job but someone has to do it.....and I will be the one to say THANK YOU!!

I think its wonderful to see men entering the nursing profession. Why should we make a big deal about an African American man going into nursing?? - I cant see the hype about that. Its good that black men are thinking of entering the nursing field period. as you Americans like to say on their sentences lol. I mean no offense by that statement by the way.

I think that's the question of the century! It shouldn't matter, but if you look at the percentage rate of African-Americans in nursing...and then look at the percentage of AA males in nursing, it's pretty disparaging. Race shouldn't matter, but when you have stats like those...it starts to become a topic of discussion.

Up here in NY that is not even an issue we are working everywhere. Of course the women still outnumber us.I'm in LTC and there are only four male nurses on staff full time in an eight unit facility.

I live in NY too. New grad in an NYC Hospital on a med surge unit. They just hired 5 new male grads within a year and half lol. Making the total 6 male nurses and 7 female workers full-timers in total.

BTW I am the only black male and 3rd male to be hired on the floor. I guess they figured I did such a good job, why not hire more male new grads. ( I am kidding, let me be humble lol). Nurses of all races came after me. In total there are 1 hispanic, 1 Asian, I Philipino and 2 white males.

I was born here but my parents or of Carribean decent like the other 7 males I knew who also graduated from my nursing program w/ me. More power to black males acheiveing BSNs or whatevr education they strive for.

It is so interesting how there are statistics on so many aspects of the medical profession but none on specific breakdown of males by race in the field

So glad I found this thread. I am a black male pre-nursing student. If all works out as planned, I will be a black male Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. I suspect that will make me the nursing equivalent of a unicorn? :specs:
