Any Aussie nurses registered in UK?

Published

Hi everyone,

I have a few questions as I am very interested in travelling to the UK in the future.

Firstly, I have recently graduated from an Aus university as a nurse and am about to start my graduate year, how exciting! So my questions are for the future and I have not planned anything yet.

I'd like to know:

~has anyone had experience with the more recent changes to registration for nurses abroad with the NMC? It seems very difficult now that you must complete an ONP.

~and how long does this procedure take? I cannot afford to be waiting around in the UK for 6 months while my registration is approved or declined for that matter.

~has anyone had experience with the company continental travel nurse? Good/bad?

P.s. this is not a financial decision but instead an experience one. I wish to travel, have an adventure, make new friends and experience life as a nurse in a different country! :)

I am afraid this is becoming the standard phrase all import nil export with Australian nurses these days.

The UK recently has not been accepting Aussie nursing degrees and on top of that they require for Aussies to pass the IELTS test, though the it is not the same requirements in return, even though the english degree is not the same as the Australian as they are not general educated.

Congratulations on your graduate position, get some experience, theatre, icu, midwifery, mental health are all good specialties to have and apply then, unfortunately Aussies must do the ONP but now also 3 months work experience, whether you have experience or post graduate degrees or not. Seems AHPRA is still tied up with the colonialism even though the mother country is not.

Thanks for the reply,

Aw that's what I feared. Very disappointed as I am very keen to live and work over there.

And it is not financially practical for me to be doing 3 months unpaid work experience.

Guess I'll just be travelling for a while! Hmm maybe once I have a specialty..

Thanks again!

Specializes in NICU.

The impression I've gotten is that you're paid at a tech level while you get the 3 months supervised experience, so you won't be totally out of pocket.

The class ONP is done over 20 days or so and isn't a big deal.

Why aren't they accepting Australian nurses anymore? I just got my license in 2012 (American) and there were quite a few Aussie nurses in my ONP class.
