I'm in a long term care facility now, but wanted to open this up to everyone.
When a pt/ resident is ordered an antibiotic short or long term, what else does your facility do to prevent or help with the nasty loose stools? Any policy you would like to share?
I've been fighting to get dietary to order yogart, but meet up with a wall (budget issues)
I've seen Florastor being used with a few of our pts and lactobacillus tabs, but this is not routine.
Any input would be a ton of help.

any time we get an antibiotic order we also get an order for acidophilus qid for the duration of the antibiotic. it seems to help quite a bit. hope this helps.

Hard to believe they won't stock yogurt for patients. It is about fifty cents a serving retail. They would get it wholesale.
Perhaps asking the physician to orders acidophilus?
