Annoyed with some instructors already!!

I just need to get this off of my chest. I started nursing school this week and today was day 3 and technically a clinical day (when we get to that point). For now we are learning skills and we started with communication.

I have no problem with that. It makes sense.

What aggravates the crap out of me is that I got stuck in the back row after they had us do some meet and greet exercises (OK, I can deal with that) and our other clinical instructors were all huddled together talking the whole time!!!!

They told us the first day to be respectful to each other and our instructors...why do instructors think they can be disruptive and get away with it? :banghead::banghead: At one point one of the instructors cell phone rings, for us that is a big no-no:no::no::no::no: but there was nothing said when this instructor's phone rang and then SHE ANSWERD IT IN CLASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was so distracted by the other instructors talking in the back (mind you I was in the back row and heard everything) that I missed half the lecture because I couldn't concentrate on what the presenter was saying. :angryfire: :angryfire

OK, thanks for listening. I feel better now that is off my chest.

Tomorrow I'm going to make sure I don't get stuck in the back again.

Wow, that's horrible.

I've had teachers cell phone's ring in class and then they excuse themselves and walk out and talk on their phone and we're like 'i thought answering your phone was not allowed?"

But at least you have not yet encountered a bad teacher quite yet, annoying, but not yet bad.

I've had my fair share of bad teachers in my program, hopefully you have none in yours.

If you really couldn't hear the class, you should have said something -- politely, of course. Learning to be an advocate for yourself is a valuable skill to learn.

yea, i think you'll find this is a common thing in nursing school. i've been frustrated with a few instructors, and can see every iota of, shall i call it confusion? this is probably because i am older, this is my second degree and career, and i can manage a biz well. i made sure i knew my stuff, baby! i can see all the problems and it kinda makes me livid... :anbd:i want perfection because this is an important thing i am embarking on, and need to know that those "teaching" me have their together! i supplement with my own research, and lots of stuff found on this website... i know i want to work at a teaching hospital so that i can begin "my nursing education" after i get my rn. :deadhorse

ok, now we all know that we have emergencies and what not....but teachers should be respectful of their students. You need to be assertive. But respectful in saying "I'm sorry, I can't hear. Can you speak up a little please?" It tough to get used to but you have to adovcate for yourself.

Yes, it's horrible, but if this is your first semester in nursing school, I hate to tell you, it's mild compared to how far some of them will go before it's over with.

I do agree about being an advocate for yourself but I'm not comfortable that applies to our professors. Do your self a favor and fly below the radar while in nursing school....way below the radar.

Assertiveness & conflict resolution skills will be essential to your survival as a nurse. Unfortunately, you're having to deal with that on the first day. Maybe if you repeatedly raise your hand, and ask the speaker to repeat herself, (because of the distracting background conversations going on around you) they will get the hint.

Can you move up front? I would never in a million years be at the back of a room for these very reasons. I don't think its worth commenting on though because you do NOT want to get on these people's bad side, especially this early.

I am in the front row in every class I take because its impossible to pay attention when there are people closer to you than the teacher, speaking. Perhaps tell the teacher you would like a seat up front because you cannot hear from the back, but I would not do it via raising my hand and announcing it in front of the entire class. That is just asking for trouble, IMO.

I respectfully disagree with that entirely. I was always taught in my classes to speak up and ask questions or say something if my learning was being disturbed by someone, especially another instructor. It was very rude what they were doing and maybe a polite tactful, could you please speak up or asking them to be quiet helps. I guess I would rather ruffle a few feathers ( which I already have and its gotten me VERY far in my program ) then to just be another name in a chair.

In my school they want you to speak up if you feel that there is something going on that is not conducive to the learning environment. Now, there are different ways of handling it and you certainly don't want to come off as a jerk or a whiny student. However, if you don't advocate for yourself, no one else will.

You were taught to speak up if your learning was distrupted by another instructor? Blows me away but I'm glad to hear that your method has worked for you. In both my RN or LPN programs it only would have painted a big target you your butt. They are all different I guess.
