Anatomy and Physiology before Chemistry

Published

Hi guys!!!

Have you taken A&P before Chemistry? I was trying to register for CHM, but there's not a single seat available in any of the campus at Miami Dade College, so I thought I could take A&P first. This is the first Pre-requisite I'll be taking...so I'm not very informed of how things work...Any advice will be highly appreciated.

Thanking in advance :)

At my school Chem is a pre req for physiology. I have a friend that said you will need some things that you learn in chem for it too... Goodluck!

Thanks for the quickly reply...I just registered for the A&P classes...Ohh gosh...Now I'm more than nervuos... 2 hours ago I was thinking I would take A&P1 next summer, and now I'm registered for it. Thanks for wishing me Luck...I will certainty need it. ;)

You should do fine in A&P without taking Chemistry first. My A&P I professor went over the essential parts of chemistry in the very beginning of the course. It should be one of the first chapters of your textbook. However, she did encourage her students to study it a little more in depth by using just the information provided in the A&P textbook. My professor was very big on the biochemistry of the physiology. Even with that being said, the chemistry chapter that was presented in the beginning of the textbook sufficed for what we needed to know in order to perform well in the class.

If it means anything, I was a Biochemistry major prior to nursing school. The upper level courses in biochemistry proved helpful in courses like A&P, Microbiology, and Nutrition, but I still could have done very well without them. You'll be fine.

Welcome to pre-nursing studies and good luck! :)

Thanks Staphylococci... I hope that I'll do just fine. I can't believe I'm starting my Pre- requisites..lol... I will probably not be able to sleep today... I'm too excited... lol

I definitely feel your excitement. I can remember back to last summer when I first started taking my prerequisites. It has been nothing but a positive experience, and I start my first semester of nursing school in August. Stay enthusiastic and motivated, and you shall achieve your goals. :)

Do you still need the English, psych, and math? If so, you'll probably be better off to take them now, then the chemistry, then the A/P. And/or watch for a spot in the chemistry class during drops and adds.

I think the chem was very helpful for physiology. Yes, the prof went over it; he called it "Chemistry in a day". Maybe it is just me but it would just have confused me if I hadn't taken the chemistry class. I could have passed the class without any chemistry, but I would been *passing the class*, not understanding the material. It might be different at your school. Chem is a prereq for physiology at my school, perhaps the prof would have taught differently if it wasn't.

If you've had chemistry in high school (and understood it, even if you don't remember all that much of it) that would be enough.

I would take the chemistry first, everything will just make a lot more sense to you. You could learn the chemistry from the chapter in your book but I doubt you will get a real understanding of it without knowing the basics. You might be able to spit back an answer you memorize but it would be hard to answer a critical thinking question like the ones I had in A&P 1. Even people who had Chem got those wrong in my class.

I believe I have no option....If I take A&P 1, or Chm now, I'll be saving like 2 semesters (and I'm counting summer). On the contrary, if I continue to take all the general courses first, I'll be wasting time. At my school you have to apply on sept 1st to start on spring, and on May 1st for the Fall, so I'll have a complete semester to finish any regular class I might have at that time, while I'm applying for the nursing program. If I don't do it like this I'll be applying for the fall 2012 instead of spring 2011. I know, it's only a semester, but my husband agreed to work all by himself while I'm taking the classes, and I believe I have to avoid waisting time.

About the chemistry..well I don't remember a thing...lol...but I'll put an extra effort to get it right....all for saving a semester...lol

Thanks for all the advices.... :)

Every professor is different. In my ap1 class chem is of little importance, and quite a few of my classmates have yet to take chem and are doing great. Just one word of advice that I have to tell myself everyday, nothing they teach you is too hard for you to Learn ( some days in lab I am just like wth, but after giving it a few minutes it all clicks) so do t get discouraged by the material, it is all easy in hindsight.

I'll have finished both A&P I and II as well as Microbiology without having taken Chemistry (I'm scheduled for it in the fall).

Haven't had any problems...the biochemistry element of Micro is where it would have com e in most handy at my school but it hasn't been a hindrance at all.

Any Chem you need to know for A&P can be learned on the spot probably.

Essential chemistry will be reviewed at the beginning of your A&P course. Just get yourself mentally prepared to put most of your study effort into this class. Good luck.
