American nurse in Germany- Landstuhl?

I have been pondering a while the idea of working/living in Germany for 6 months +. I am wondering if anyone here has worked at Landstuhl or another US hospital in Germany? If so, I have questions for you, if you are interested in providing answers! Thanks

While I can not answer as to working as a nurse at Landstuhl, I was stationed in the area when I was in the service and received medical care at that hospital. Assuming that you are open to new living experiences, I would have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed living in Germany. There are many Americans who have married Germans and continue to live in the area after leaving the service. The area is beautiful and has a lot to offer in cultural activities.

Its near impossible to get a job at a base in Germany. I have been applying since I graduated as a NP in Dec 2007. I travel to Germany frequently and have worked at the bases in Wiesbaden/Mainz-Kastel AAFES/Food service while studying biology at the University of Mainz. It is pretty easy to get a job in food service... I was accepted to medical school but the only job I could get with my BS Biology was in Food service so I came back to the US because I just couldn't see myself doing that for 7 years. Now I am a NP and still trying to get a job there....

Do you speak German? If so you may want to try switzerland, they need nurses and pay 2x what German nurses make.

I don't want to sound too negative but they just don't need a lot of help at the bases in Germany as a lot of military wives are nurses and get preference in hiring. I had 3 interviews while in Germany at the bases and nothing turned out of it. Heidelberg wanted to hire me but they just didn't have a position available.

Good luck!
