Just a little...vent I suppose.
Found out the other night that one of my patients left AMA a few days after finding out he needed open heart surgery for multiple occlusions and valve issues.
It breaks my heart because I tried so hard to communicate with him, get him the support and resources he needed, and after two days away he walks out.
I really hope he gets the care he needs, before it is too late.

Hopefully he will come around. He might just need to get away for a bit to get hold of things, slow it all down and think a bit, you know?
I am sure that you gave him all the info and support possible, and he knows this. :heartbeat

Oh well, you did the best that you could. It is up to him now. Please don't be too upset about the decisions that this pt made.

You did the best that you could. Maybe this is a way for the patient to cope with this news.
This is shocking news for him after all. He might be in denial and think that if he leaves the hospital he will be alright. And if he forgets about it, he won't need surgery.
Just continue to be a good nurse, and be a good educator.
