If your husband wants to get out of Texas, too, mazel tov!

I would NOT want to be a nurse in Texas. There is less protection for workers, period, in Texas than anywhere else in the Union. I mean, you guys don't even have Workman's Comp!

I have never heard any of that before. I think Texas is a wonderful place to work. Texas nurses get paid the highest in the United States when compared to the cost of living. What specifically are you talking about when you say that we get less protection?

And yes, we do have workers comp.

I've spoken with other nurses from this forum, from Texas, who told me about workmen's comp, and the lack of protection.

They can chime in if they want.

Here goes.....I am a mother of two beautiful girls (ages 2, and 7) and a wife to a wonderfully supportive husband. I have been plugging away at pre-requisites for a year now and should be done this coming summer. I have always loved the east coast (I am from Texas) and was planning on applying to several schools out there but I have been having second thoughts. Would it be selfish of me to uproot my family because I got accepted to an east coast school? My husband is all for it if that is what I want, but is it doable? I know DH would have to find a new job, the girls would have to go to new schools, and not to mention moving our stuff but to be honest we would be doing this anyway. I live 2 hours away from the nearest nursing program and I don't want to continue driving 4 hours a day M-F. Has anyone moved cross country (with a family) to attend school? Whatever decision I come to I know I do not want to start my nursing career in Texas.

I have never uprooted my family for school, but we have up rooted our family for my husbands work many times. I see nothing at all wrong with it. We do what we think is best for our family, if you going to school will better the life for you and your family and your husband also agrees with this then fabulous!

I have not heard about any lack of protection, but if you have any information on that I would love to hear it. Especially since I will be staying here when I graduate.

I'm not sure who would tell you that we don't have workers comp in Texas...I work for a company that owns many Texas hospitals and I bill all of the Texas workers comp claims every day. I actually have first-hand knowledge and experience with this. I promise we have it!

Yeah that is strange! Maybe it's just a nasty rumor! haha.

Just like the rumor that says that everyone in Texas rides a horse to work, has big hair, and listens to country music!! :lol2:

Why would that be selfish? I followed my husband for 13 yrs while he was active duty Army, he'd do the same for me. We live in Northern Calif where there are plenty of jobs and pay is great so that is not an issue for us. For you, I'd say if its better, go for it! Your kids will be just fine. I have 3 kids that have moved all over lol, and after the initial fear of a new place, they adapted just fine!! Best wishes, keep us posted.

I don't think you are being selfish at all. I say Go For It!!!

I am in Texas now & moved here from the East coast & honestly would like to go back there myself one day..... (not so much for nursing reasons, but to be closer to my family).

I'm not positive about the Workman's Comp here.... I THINK it has to do with the company's do not HAVE to offer Workman's Comp BUT they MUST offer a similiar workman's comp type of insurance.... they just have the option of getting a private policy on their own.

And I have heard a lot of negative things from Texas nurses on these boards too..... you could check out the Texas section in the "Local" message board or do a search and find them. I like to think that it's just that people come here to vent.... because surely not ALL nurses in Texas are unhappy!

Thanks for all the encouragement.

Moving to the east coast is purely for personal reasons and not necessarily due to the working conditions. Although I have read many complaints regarding the lack of support. I guess all I needed was to hear that I am not a terrible person for following my dreams. I tend to look out for everyone elses best interest before indulging myself, hence the nursing career lol.
