I work with residents with alzheimers and Last week we got a new admit. So I was trying to do my assessment of what he was oriented to. I tried my hardest to remember to ask open ended questions instead of questions that can be answered with Yes or No.
Here is how our conversation went:
ME: "What is your name ?"
Resident: "Mr. XYZ"
Me: "What is todays date ?"
Resdient: ( unable to remember date)
( Now for the funny part)
Me: "Where are you ? "
Resident: " I'm Right Here" ( and he looked at me like I had 6 heads on my shoulders for asking him such a silly question)
Needless to say he is AOx1

I loved the Alzheimers/Dementia residents I took care of, some just said and did the funniest things.

I agree with kathy313 and Kaiasunshine~~ anytime I worked in the dementia unit (we called it Memory Lane) I knew it was going to be fun--they say and do some of the funniest things. I miss working with them...

I asked a resident one time who the president of the US was. They calmly replied "I don't know because I don't give a damn. He don't know my name either"! :)

When I was young the elderly scared me. In nursing I got as far away from them as I could, I worked in NICU. Now, I just adore them! They make me smile, they teach me things, they break my heart...

i had an absolutely horrible day, and this made me laugh! thank you for sharing, nurselovejoy. i love caring for elderly patients, too...demented and not-so. :)
(while reading your patient's reply, i heard a big "duuuhh!" at the end of it. had he been 60 years younger, it may have been there!)

When my LTC day is really stressful I go down to the dementia unit and just sit and observe; somedays, I fit in really well. I always leave feeling much more mellow with a better perspective on things. I LOVE those residents so much, they're my babies.
I'm always fascinated by the way they can compensate for lack of orientation, a few of my favorites:
Can you tell me your name? "Of course." What is your name? "That's none of your business"
What is the name of the president? "He's an idiot"
How old are you? "Your mother never taught you manners"
What building are you in? "Don't you know?"
I love these people.

I'm going to miss my residents, especially the one lady whom I'm suppose to run off and get married with.
