Hi guys,
Was wondering which is the best way to go with going to the USA to use an agency or go it alone (not that I even know if you can go it alone) My sister lives in New Jersey so this is where I want to go I am in the 1st stages of getting CGFNS verification. Can I approach local New ?Jersey hospitals for employment and then with them do the CGFNS, NCLEX RN and visa stuff myself?
I think it would be much easier to use an agency but I am worried that I will not know which are the good agencys. Can anyone reccomend a good agency I can approach for information. I dont know if this can be posted on the open forum so please feel free to instant message me.
Many thanks folks,

Can be done yourself agency are not forced to place you in New Jersey. I have had a quick look on the New jersey BON website and appears that all you need is CES from CGFNS and confimation of nurse licence from NMC (not sure how much they charge but can be sent to I think up to 6 places in the 1 payment) https://allnurses.com/jump.cgi?ID=1188
For immigration you will need Visa screen from CGFNS and would suggest applying now all you would need to do once passing NCLEX is to get NJ BON to verify pass. Hospitals are mre likely to employ if you have already passed NCLEX they have to apply for your greencard.
The problem really has to do with your UK training and whether it meets US requirements and the pain comes in if you are short of hours in certain subjects as there is no where in the UK where these hours can be made up as a lot of people are finding out on here.
For the whole process you are looking at approx 12 months may be less or more but a rough guide and that would be the same whether done by self or agency
Good Luck

Just my opinion.......go it alone, especially if you have a personal preference of where you want to live and work. And yes, you can go it alone, I did. Again, my opinion, but it's not necessarily easier to use an agency, just read all of the horror stories on here from nurses who are at the mercy of agencies (lack of communication, long wait times, false promises...I could go on....) Seems the only advantage of using an agency is they pay for your CGFNS/NCLEX fees.......but they get that back many times over once you are in the US and working for them.

I don't understand at all why people go through the agencies...

Hi!
I guess many of us just don't know how to find hospitals willing to petition. I have noticed lots of enquiries about hospitals receptive to international staff - but no replies. It is kind of overwhelming to think of where and how to start the business. When you have your licence and VS in hand; you just look for vacancies and interviews I guess?

There are just too many people in and out of this forum who have been maltreated, abused, and used by agencies whose only after one thing: profit! Of course, there may be some agencies out there that are well meaning.
But are you willing to play a Russian roulette on your future? If you're patient enough, there are hospitals/health systems who go directly to your country (in our case The Philippines) to directly hire nurses. Or if you have friends/relatives in the US, they could make direct inquiries for you. There are also a good number of facilities in the US where you could apply on-line. Just make sure you have all your papers (exams, docus, etc) set.
Then just read the different steps found on different threads of this forum. Sooner or later you'll realize that you have done it without the dangers of abusive agencies.
Goodluck!
