age of transfer credits

Published

Hello all!

Recent member to this site and I have a couple of questions for everyone. I recently decided that what I've done for the last 7 years (commercial carpenter) is not for me. I have a bachelors in biology that I earned roughly 8 years ago. I have been reading that most programs do not accept science credits over 5 years old, and then I read some responses to posts on here that claim their program accepted credits that were over 20 years old.

For those that were in or are in programs that accepted older transfer credits, where are they? I really don't want to repeat courses I have already taken if at all possible. Thanks for the input!

It varies program to program. My school doesn't care how old your math/science courses are, just your grade in them.

I'm in South Central Texas.

My program (a direct-entry MSN in Chicago) only has an time limit on A&P (five years).

Thanks for the responses guys. I guess I will have to "shop around" for programs. I live just outside of Seattle and all the programs I have looked into out here say all your science courses must be no more than 5 years old. I still have to take micro and anatomy and physiology as it wasn't a requirement for my degree so those will be recent. I just really don't want to spend the time and money on a bunch of courses I've already taken.

What other science courses are they asking for that you've completed? The only other science I've seen required with a time limit on it is chemistry. The programs I'll be applying to have 5 year and 10 year limits, both of which are shorter than when I finished my biology degree. I also hadn't taken A&P so that was new, I'm in the process of retaking micro and will likely take a CLEP exam for the chemistry credit. So I'm only having to repeat micro.

The Accelerated BSN programs I've looked into only have time limits on A&P I/II, Micro, and Chemistry. My Biostats and developmental psychology credits from my degree still counted so I didn't have to repeat them.

It's probably possible to find programs that will take all your older credits but figure out just how many classes you'd actually need to repeat, if CLEP exams are an option, etc before seriously looking at moving across the country. Just my opinion at least.

Quota,

The programs I am looking into require cell bio, chem, A&P, and micro. So I would have to take cell and chem again if they deem that they are too old. I really don't want to do that. Plus the institutions I'm looking at taking my micro and A&P only allow you to take one science course a quarter. Tack on cell and chem and I'm looking at another year before I can even APPLY to nursing school. It's a bit of a time crunch for me because my wife and I kind of relied on my income from the union. I feel like I should have done this years ago.

Wow, cell bio feels like overkill. Between A&P and micro everything I remember from cell bio is covered really. Do they allow CLEP exams? That's what I plan to do for Chemistry myself.
