Advice for soon-to-be NCLEX takers...

My advice for soon-to-be NCLEX takers:

1.) If you can, take Kaplan. I TRULY believe that Kaplan is WHY I passed NCLEX. I used Saunders a little, but not as much. However, Saunders's is great for info. *Note*: No, I do not work for Kaplan, I am just a big fan. On the other hand, my classmate did not like it and preferred Saunder's).

2.) Unfortunately, my school required us to buy and use ATI during school. Forget it...ATI sucks and is worthless.

3.) My original study plan was this: make a big list of common diseases and medications (you can take these from an NCLEX study guide book) and study about 3 diseases a day - I mean in depth studying. Re-read your med surg book, pharm book, lab books, NCLEX books regarding that one disease. Then practice NCLEX questions for that disease. I was planning on doing this months in advance to allow sufficient time for all the diseases. But, life got in the way I wasn't able to finish all the diseases. I would say, though, that it was a pretty good plan (albeit lengthy).

4.) DO NOT CRAM. Give yourself time. Although it "worked" for me, it was horrible, horrible stress and I wouldn't recommend it. :nono:

5.) I thought I failed when I was done....everyone does. But it's true - stats are in our favor...most people pass on the first try. Just relax.

6.) Study the "big" diseases (DKA, DM, MI, CVA etc) and have a good knowledge of them. You probably won't be tested on them directly, but you will need to know them to answer questions.

7.) Really study precautions (airborne, droplet, contact). It's definitely a favorite topic on the NCLEX.

8.) TAKE YOUR TIME during the test. DO NOT RUSH. Really make sure you READ the questions all the way through and all the answers as well.

9.) Lastly, relax. It's much easier for me to say than for you to do, but try to relax. Don't study the day of the test. Give your mind a break.

Just my :twocents:. Hope this helps!! You will get there!!!!

Very good advice!

I also believe if it wasnt for Kaplan, I wouldnt have passed either! I highly recommend Kaplan!
