Advice re employment in Nova Scotia (ER)

Published

Hello Everyone,

I am an experienced foreign ER Nurse currently working in a Level 1 ER in British Columbia. I am waiting for my skilled worker Permanent Residency but am hoping to move to Nova Scotia to be nearer family.

Can anyone advise me as to whether employers in Nova Scotia sponsor for a work permit in the interim and how I would go about this? I came through an Agency to BC, is there any that specialize in placing RN's in Nova Scotia at all? I am open to all areas and have extensive trauma and Triage experience so hopefully could work in most ER's.

Thankyou all for your time!

May want to check out Capitol Health jobs but been told by a few that internal applicants have first option. A lot will depend on area of NS you wish to live. Amherst has a small ER that sends a lot of cases to Moncton, Halifax etc depending on what speciality is required for the patient. I think Springhill has a similar set up. Halifax is probably place to be looking at as a lot of ER's in other places like Springhill, Pugwash, and other smaller ER's find they are closing for 12 to 24 hours once or more times a week due to lack of doctors. I knew someone who was an experienced ER NP and she struggled to find a job)

In regards to work permit they may sponsor you whilst waiting but you may find it better to stay where you are until PR sorted and then look at moving.

Also to add any questions not pertaining to working in Canada and work permits come under this we ask is posted under the International forum as a lot of Canadian nurses will not have a clue on requirements for work permits.

Also have you started process with NS college of RN's?

Thanks Silver Dragon,

I havent started the process yet trying to find information first. It appears my PR may take up to twp years so thats why I was looking for information on work permit sponsors.

I have checked Capital Healths website and they have no ER positions at all, looks like they are pooling.

thanks I will post this under international as well.

What country are you from? Most I believe are taking less than 2 years to get PR. I am from the UK and looking at 12 months to getting my PR

Hi Silverdragon

I am from the UK as well. I am really shocked that the process is taking so long when I first applied I was told the whole process would be about a year to 15months. Now it seems that that timeframe starts when Buffalo actually start processing your file (to date around 17months). As mine was just received in Dec 2010 its gonna be ages and they are still making a decision on me so its not even in process. Checked E-CAS and I am not coming up on there yet! Have been following Track-it but they are so sporadic theres no consistency with the dates so difficult to predict.

As my work permit expires in 2012 I am obviously now concerned especially as some areas of BC are not renewing specialist nurses work permits and several UK and Australians were sent home (double figures). There are a lot of job cuts. So as you can see pretty worried which is why I am trying to explore all angles.

Hi Kay,

which agency did you use to relocate to BC? I am a US trained nurse seeking employment sponsorship in order to relocate to Canada. any advise will be appreciated

From your previous post, you said you had been approved by CARNA. Do you realize that CARNA does not cover BC?

When you say you you are a US trained nurse, do you mean you were educated in the US? Which state issued you a practice permit? Are you a US citizen?

There is something that you are not telling us. US nurses know about the NAFTA pact.

Hi Fiona,

thanks for your reply. I'm trained in the US as an international student from Africa. My RN license is for Florida. I definately understand that CARNA is separate from BC, just wanted to know how you went about it to find a sponsor. so far my attempts have been unsuccessful. thanks
