CA-NCLEX expires this December!

Help! My California NCLEX wiill expire this December. My agency has passed a letter of extension to BRN early this July. They said they have indeed extended it when we called to verify by phone. But until now, we haven't received a letter stating so. We called again two weeks ago just to be sure... and we got the same answer that my NCLEX was indeed extended. Without a letter? Is that the common practice? Am I just being paranoid? I mean without a legal black and white print that I am extended or not... it could just be regarded as hearsay. Nobody wants to take the NCLEX twice. Moreso if you already passed it the 1st time. I hope the state of California will be lenient on this matter because a lot of NCLEX will be expiring left and right until RETRO si resolved.

Hi Guys... when I started this thread a while back, I had been waiting for my extension letter from California when we requested for it since July(and my NCLEX expires this December).

Im happy to tell you that they sent an extension letter just this January 3, 2008 from a certain Ms Chan. Its valid for 1 yr. That gives me time to send it for another state if ever retrop still push thru 2008.

Tnx suzzane and lawrence for your suggestions. You've helped me and a multitude others who awaits NCLEX expiration!

We should thank you for updating everyone else. ;)

Thanks Lawrence. I read from this forum just a few months ago that Nclex results do not expire only the CA application and the only thing you have to do is pay another application when it expires and you can't do this in advance since you can't have 2 applications with them. When I asked about a month ago how to go about this, silverdragon replied that there were issues now in CA that when you file is destroyed same goes with you test result.... that is when and only I panicked....

I guess all I have to do is wait and try to contact them thru email. Thank you for taking time in reading my inquiries.

Yes, there are many instances where when one asks an inquiry with the CA BRN they get a diff. answer from the one answering the phone even though it's the same question. I think this is the cause of all the confusion. There was even a report very recently that CA BRN will soon require that all nurses be licensed and may be effective Jan. of this year and that new policy posted on their website. So far, nothing changed on their website as of yet.

Anyway, you did send everything early last month and if your fedex tracker says it was delivered successfully and if the bank draft was en-cashed I am sure it is under process.

Sacramento and some parts of the West Coast are also being battered by very bad weather now. Anywhere from very strong winds and floods in the low lying areas to even a blizzard and some hail in the high altitude areas.

So, bare with them. Do send them that e-mail and make another request w/ the proper explanations just to be sure. Nothing to loose anyway.

I think what you can do now is to check-up again w/ VT if they have received anything yet since things maybe toxic in Sacramento for a while.

Best of luck and don't worry too much. You already did your part.

California has been hit with some bad storms over the past few days, and there are many that still do not have electricity. More than 8 feet of snow in the mountain areas in some places.

Any requests should always be made by formal letter, they can never do a thing with a verbal request. No one there has permission to do anything without it in writing.

NCLEX results do not expire, but remember that they are only sent to the state that you tested for. If a file gets destroyed from that state, then the results go with the file.

We have been recommending that someone start the process for licensure in another state six months out before their letter will expire. Nothing is ever done immediately by any state BON and you need to allow time for any issues that may pop up. It is a waste to start it before then.

And we have been only hearing recently that some have been able to get an extension, would never plan on getting one automatically. Do not think that it is something that is being done all of the time, or they would have sent a letter out to that effect or included that in the original letter that you could ask for an extension.

But 6 months ago, this was not written... everytime someone asks about their ca application getting expired, replies were we just need to pay the fees when it expire. Nothing about when your file is destroyed your NCLEX goes with it. I have never thought of having my test scores forwarded to another state thinking that I won't have any problems with CA application. This was just an option I had to take to save myself from retaking the exam.

It was always posted that when the file is destroyed, everything is destroyed. CA can make changes to what they are doing or have been doing and they have. This is why we have been posting for everyone to apply to another state before their file is destroyed.

If you take a minute to think about it, you cannot refile an application with them until your file is actually gone; you cannot have two open files at the same time. CA normally has not been known to issue an extension to their three year rule; we have been hearing of late about it, but it is not routinely done or it would have been included in the letter that was sent out that extensions were an option.

Information is always changing and that is why we always try to update things here when we hear about them. Nothing ever stays the same in any state.

This has been written for several months now, and if you read back to any of my posts for more than a year, you will see that CA has never been recommended for a foreign grad by me, actually not for a few years because of this for one reason. And we always tell someone to check directly with their BON, or in this case, BRN as rules do change. And it is not their responsibility to send you a copy of what has changed, it is considered your responsibility to check with them or their website for any changes.

If there was just the simple idea of submitting an application again and paying fees, that would have been included in the passing letter as well, but it was not.

There are actually many threads here on this forum about why one should not go thru CA for initial licensure. There is only so much that one person can do. And the reasons why that one should not go thru CA.

hi suzanne, thanks for the info, it really helped me a lot... i'l now begin with my formal letter asking for transfer of my nclex scores to nm.. thank you!

I have sent a formal letter to CA just yesterday thru fedex, I also sent the same letter thru email and fax... I will just have to wait how it goes since I have done all things on my part and nothing beyond that I can do but to wait.

The good news is, I inquired to VT since on the application packet that I sent them, there is nothing that states that I passed the NCLEX already in CA, so I emailed them about this last week, I got a reply from a certain Sandy Swenson that I just have to send them the letter from CA bon stating that I have passed CA NCLEX with the date when I took the exam and they will then issue me a VT license. When this happens, this is enough good news for me... and If CA bon will grant my request on the transfer or the extension, it would be a super bonus.

Thank you for all the help and the ideas on how to do things.

I'm sure everything will be fine.

May you please clarify your statement a bit. When Ms. Sandy Swenson (e-mail on application form) said that you only need to send the copy is she saying that you - the applicant can directly send it (no additional cost except you sending the copy) or is she implying to let CA BRN send in the copy of test results ($10) instead of the $60 service from CA BRN.

Just want to clarify this with you as some who may read your post passing-by may get the wrong idea. This also entails that you can just use the application packet for foreign educated RNs (there is no separate endorsement application packet for foreign-educated nurses for VT) and just send in the copy of test results either CA BRN sending it or you if that is all that is needed.

i emailed her just to ask since there is nothing on the application stating if you have passed the nclex or so if i need to send them a formal letter stating that i have passed the ca nclex, but i also mentioned that i have sent ca bon a request to transfer my test scores to vt bon and this is the repsonse i got from her

"you have to send us a copy of your ca pass letter with the date you took the exam on it. we'll then issue you a vt nursing license."

today, i sent her the copy of what i have received from ncsbn that i have passed ca nclex, the one that has a date when i took the exam, the one that looks like att, and also i sent the copy of the letter from ca bon that says about ssn etc, just to be sure i sent them the right document. hope everything would be ok.

thank you and i hope my situation would be of help to others who are also in the same situation as i am.
