Advice- Non Clinical RN Jobs

can someone give me some ideas on non- clinical jobs for rn's....i have been a lvn for many years and now a rn..the politics of this profession are getting to me and i need to break away from the traditional nursing role....i think that its my time in ltc that has just put me in burn out mode...i have a associates in nursing and a bachelors in general studies with concentrations in gov/soc..i have been looking at law school and getting a msn with concentrations in health care management...just thought y'all may be able to shed some light on my little situation here...thanks in advance

I have been asking myself the same question for a week. I was an LPN for 3 years, have been an RN in acute rehab hospital setting for only a few months. I like the bedside, but the overwhelming documentation, the massive amounts of work required for new admits and most importantly the physical labor and obese pts are getting to be too much for me.

So like txspadequeen, what can I do? I have a BA in Political Science, an Associates RN from EC, enrolled in EC MSN program but have not started any courses yet because I know my days are numbered at the bedside (My back is not going to take much more). My body is screaming at me from lifting, transferring, toileting these obese pts, and my mind is numb from the ever-increasing busywork of documentation. Is this it? Do we have to leave nursing all together because of these burdens and the silly politics that we are all subjected to?

Umm. . . . . I think that this may be it. At least for me. Right now I am looking in to clinical research nursing. Completely task driven, which is a good thing. Some patient contact, but very controlled.

Also, I am taking an online coding course. :specs:

im looking at legal nurse consulting but really i don't have enough rn exp for that ...don't know i will find something....one thing i do know is that most of my issue comes from my lengthy career in ltc....i just cant take all the drama and politics....

I've checked out the CLNC thing, and you might look into that a little bit before investing. I have a nurse friend in a major metropolitan area who took the course and is still paying for it, but has never had a consult.

I hear you on the LTC drama and politics. Never seen such business deaf idiots in my life. I can truly understand your quota of that junk has been filled. My quota is just about been reached. We can't say anything for fear that we will lose our jobs, and in this economy that is not an option.

Quality Improvement, Case Management, Home Health care ( easier on the back), hospice nursing, clinical data analyst for products like Epic or Meditech, ask a nurse phone centers, insurance companies, risk managment.

Most of these positions will pay you less, due to the fact they can pay nurses less.

I too, was burnt out from traditional nursing. Now I'm an MDS Coordinator & this works well for me. Yes, I know it's still LTC & you still have the wonderful state surveys and all but I'm not doing direct patient care. I'm even considering doing Interim MDS work. This is something you may want to think about doing.

i have no experience in case management , mds and have not been a rn long enough for telephone triage...i have been reading and looking all day at positions that are open for case management...they are looking for nurses with 5 years case management exp..which i just dont have...i mean i could just put in a app and see what happens..maybe they would be willing to train someone interested in learning the job...

You can check aanac.org for MDS workshops. With your experience in LTC, this would be a great option. Wish you well!:o
