Advice for a new foreign educated nurse that got her first job.

Published

Hi everybody!!

I'm a foreign educated nurse. I've been out of nursing field for almost 5 years since I left my native country Peru. However, after overcoming many challenges, becoming proficient in English, passing successfully the NCLEX-RN and taking RN refresher course , finally I will be able to practice the profession I love. I was offered a position in Telemetry Unit. I'm so happy for this new opportunity. But at the same time I'm feeling so nervous. I do not have a lot of experience in this field, I've been reading and trying to learn more before starting my new job. I got my ACLS certification. But still I'm afraid, I'm not familiarized with the health system here. But I'm willing to learn the most I can. Somebody can tell me his/her experience as a new nurse specially being a foreign educated nurse. What can I expect?

I don't have any foreign educated nurse experience but I just wanted to say if you have done all of that in the last come years I'm sure you are going to be fine :)

It's normal to be nervous and afraid. Be kind to yourself and good luck!

I think you've done as much as you can to prepare yourself. It is normal to feel trepidations. Give yourself credit for what you know, ask questions, don't be in a hurry, communicate with your preceptor and manager, and take it one day at a time. Good luck!

Thank you so much for your words of encouragement. Knowing that everybody goes through this, helps me to handle my fears.
