I suppose the answer to this question is totally dependent on what the individual wants out of a career.

I wouldn't be happy as a nurse practitioner because I know I'd dislike several aspects, including the 40 hour work weeks, the face time with patients, and the added accountability. Your mileage may vary.

I'm guessing those who are happy being NPs would say that the time and effort was worth it; those who do not like the job would probably say it isn't.
