Admitting a med error on Facebook??!!

Published

An RN that I graduated with, recently went on Facebook and admitted to a med error. And then gave details.

Myself (and one other person) cautioned her not to do this, so she erased this status. But she still continues to "talk"about the 'crazy' psych pts she works with. It's awful, I hate that she does this.

Ever hear of anyone else doing such a thing?

I'd love to hear other people's experiences/opinions on this.

Thanks!

Another RN who works on that same floor, refers to it (psych unit) as a "three ring". On Facebook.

Disrespectful, IMHO.

Our facility just released a policy about social media. I have a private profile on FB and I don't list my facility name. I also don't mention pts or coworkers by name. Our union told the facility that they have concerns about the policy and reserve the right to defend any employee who gets in trouble over it.

While I don't thnk anyone should be mentioning peoples names on there, or defaming anyone(patients or coworkers), I feel that if I vent about work(within reason) it's not any different than me talking to my friends, my boyfriend, my parents about the crap day I had or the fact that all in my work life is not roses. What's next, someone will post a pic of themselves having a few beers, and the hospital will say you're reflecting poorly on them? It's a slippery slope.

I know that some employers check things like facebook, myspace, and other things before they hire you, I am sure there have been checks after being hired where people have been let go because of the things they have said, just something to think about I suppose.

Was just thinking about what the above poster wrote. Employers use facebook, myspace, etc. and all these websites now when looking into apps. I like my life private as well. You will never will catch me posting things on the internet about me. I was shocked when I looked at my twins sisters one time. To some new grads who say they are having hard times finding a job, its something you may want to look into. I know its a rough time, but you want everything to look good nowadays.

SUCKS! Stupid to admit on facebook, but need to weed out these nurses! Not even so much for the mistake but the obvious disrespect for pt. by comments made!

good call. i'm guessing she is going to self-destruct, sooner or later.

she is definatley going to hit a wall, and if she was your friend before this job, its nice if you can be there, but as my father says... you are judged by the people around you. her inappropriateness may become your burden if people associate her behavior with you. "she was there and didnt do anything about it" kind of talk. you worked hard for your licence, you need to take measures to ensure its long life.

We have a social networking policy in place where I work...and the institution has fired 2 people already. I work in an at will employer state and it is also in the hospital policy that you will not publicly denounce/defame the institution or it will lead to termination. People need to be careful. We also have a few nurses that have friended patients families....now how utterly stupid is that!

hi sitcom,

thanks for your reply!

there are at least 30 of us who are her "friends" on fb- only because we all graduated together and like to keep in touch. that being said, i'm not too worried about my license, especially since we don't for the same employer.

she was the oldest one to graduate in our class (i think she is around 45), so one would think through life experiences in the past, her big 'mouth' may have gotten her into trouble a time or two in the past. :twocents:

*Cringes* I can't imagine admitting a med error on facebook! Reminds me of a certain facebook friend I have who constantly updates her statuses about her fights with her husband and in-laws (who are also her facebook friends). Some things should be kept personal. I imagine this will come back to bite her!

This acquaintance of yours is heading for a very unpleasant conversation with management. Wow. Employers may eventually take a legal beating for trying to dictate what employees may do during their off-hours, but revealing details about a specific patient's med error on Facebook is wildly inappropriate and indefensible.

Either run for the hills and de-friend her or make some popcorn and settle in to watch the eventual fireworks.

Lack of common sense. Everyone that gets in, & graduates from nursing school does not need to be a nurse.

Alot of them need to be patients.

I learned this in my 1st two days of school.

Thank God it's over!!!!:uhoh3:

Wow! First off, I would NEVER post anything on any global web site that would jeopordize my RN license that I worked so hard for and absolutely love. That being said, why would anyone put any incriminating information about themselves or their facililty on the web? And let's not forget HIPPA people!!! Things posted on the web can be traced and can have drastic consequences.
