Admission GPA the only criteria for IUPUI BSN?

Published

Hello, all. I am new to this site, and just applied to IUPUI's traditional BSN program.

Does anybody know how they determine your admissions GPA? Is it just the courses you list on the application, or do they count others on your transcript as well? Do I understand correctly that they just take all the "Category A" applicants, rank them by admissions GPA, then cut the list off at the number of spots? Any idea where those GPA's cut off typically?

I have had so much recent math and science with A's, I shudder to think I might not get in, all over getting a B's in Psych, Soc, and Speech back in the 80's!

Thanks in advance for any input. I'm going to be nervous for 6 months waiting to get THE BIG LETTER!

Glad I found this site - it looks like there are plenty of other hopefuls like me, and I'm not the only one crazy enough to make a huge career switch at mid-life!

Hi,

I don't have specific info for IUPUI, but IU Kokomo does prioritize strictly on GPA. Since they are in the same family, I would think they would have similar admissions policies.

IU Kokomo currenly has a BSN & an ASN program & they have a core set of prerequisites that counts toward the gpa requirement. I am told that as long as what you took in the past isn't part of those pre-reqs, it won't count against you. There is a minimum overall GPA requirement, but it is much higher in the core nursing classes that are counted toward applications.

I too, have done better this time around than in my first degree. My overall gpa isn't as good as my "nursing gpa" but I think that is pretty common for returning adult students.

GPA cutoff is probably specific to each campus. I am told to expect the 3.8 range for the ASN program as a cutoff. BSN is a bit lower because they accept more students.

I think here, we should find out in March if we make it in for fall or not. You certainly aren't the only one to switch gears at the 40ish mark. I think there are a lot of us & as a whole, we are doing very well if this board is any indication!

Good luck. Here's hoping we both make it!

Hey! Just wanted to let you know that IUPUI is VERY difficult to get into due to the competition (soooo many people in Indianapolis area!) You might want to think about applying to other schools, too (depending on where you live, by the time you fight downtown traffic, it might be the same as if you had driven to other areas). I considered Marion, University of Indianapolis, but decided on Ball State. I live on the North side of Indianapolis and it takes me the same amount of time to drive there as it would have downtown. I just wouldn't put all my eggs in one basket. Lastly, call the IUPUI school of nursing and ASK what criteria they use to admit people!!!! Good luck!:)

Hiya! Thanks for the replies. I did find out that they do go strictly by the pre-nursing GPA, at least for now. However, I decided to start with Ivy Tech's LPN program instead, so I can get a better-paying job sooner, to help me survive financially through school. I already have all the general pre-reqs needed for the RN or BSN locally, so I won't need extra classes when I'm ready to go to the next level.

I wonder if I should let my application go through IUPUI, just to see if I get an offer... On second thought, some poor student might get an "alternate" letter because of me, and be a nervous wreck for weeks. I better call them up today and withdraw it. I'm definitely IN the LPN program for fall (and very excited!).

Incidentally, my campus of Ivy Tech picks LPN students strictly by the PSB-PN test score, for now. I think that is changing in 2007, though.

Thanks for the morale boost regarding becoming a nurse at a ripe age. I really don't feel my age at all, but its kinda wierd to be starting a program with kids the same age as mine. I'm learning that there are so many others out there like me. I guess we had the music up too loud, back in the day, to hear our true calling!

Thanks again. I'm loving this site.

:balloons: CONGRATULATIONS! on getting in to the LPN Progam:balloons:

I will be starting the RN program at Ivy Tech Lafayette.

This site is awesome and I have learned so much just from reading it.

Good Luck to you this fall!!
