If one is long  retired and has let license as RN in Rhode Island lapse, is it considered acceptable to add title 'R.N.' after one's name in his/her obituary? I have heard conflicting answers on this. Thank you for any help.

I think in an obit it would be perfectly fine to state that the person was a retired RN. Adding "RN (retired)" would be appropriate too IMHO
