Hey everyone! I'm so lost.. I haven't started my nursing program yet (still waiting on the letter ) and I was looking at jobs available in my area and the requirements are confusing me.. Most of them require ACLS and BLS certificates.. I've figured what the certificates are but I'm wondering how do you get them? Is this something done during the nursing program, on your own after, or what? Where is a good place to get information? Also, I was wondering how new graduates are finding jobs? Everything I looked at said experience required.. Oh yah and one more question.. I really want to go into ICU nursing (something along the lines of PICU or NICU) but every job I've seen says previous ICU exp. required... Well if that's the case, then how do new grads get into the ICU field?
Anyways, thanks in advance for the help!!!

Most nursing programs require you to get your BLS (aka CPR) class done prior to start of clinicals. ACLS is advanced and some employers offer it or you can pay to get it on your own.

Either a hospital or a paramedic ambulance service can probably help you locate ACLS and BLS classes. Many offer classes or know of local classes that non-employees can enroll in. Good luck!

The American Heart Association should have a list of classess for both ACLS and BLS in your area. As far as starting out as a new grad and getting a job, most hospitals will offer an internship or a preceptorship program designed to acclemate the graduate nurse. This usually involves maybe some class time that the hospital provides along with having a nurse preceptor for a period of time. Usually 12-24 weeks. This is also the best way to go to get your foot in the door for ICU. Good luck!
Thanks so much! So a BLS is a CPR certification? I am required to have Adult and Infant/Child prior to starting... Thanks again!!

BLS for healthcare providers also includes AED and using a breathing mask/ambu bag.
