Been there, done that. Thirteen years as a CPA/auditor. Yes, the pay was okay. But there was no job satisfaction for me. Being an accountant/auditor was draining the life out of me.

If you want to get answers to those questions about accounting, you should be asking..... um, accountants, not nurses.

I was a payroll accountant for a couple of months. Pay was ok, drove me nuts though. All those numbers. But once I got the hang of it, it was ok.

I'm currently working for a valuation group and I work with tons of CPA's, particularly auditors. I can't stand it, the work is so bland and definitely not rewarding. Also, in the accounting field I'm in, it's a type of consulting so there are busy weeks and really really slow weeks (not due to the recession). I absolutely can't stand sitting at my desk with nothing to do, so I started researching new career options and so now I'm starting nursing pre-reqs!

I just couldn't picture myself crunching numbers the rest of my life, if I have to work, I want to be doing something worthwhile where I know I'm helping people. Nursing is also very versatile, there are so many long-term career options, accounting, not so much...

I work in the insurance field so I considered getting a degree in accounting (plus, my employer would pay for it). However, I am at my desk as I type, and I am BORED TO DEATH. There is no way I could do be fulfilled in the accounting/insurance/business field. I, too, make a decent salary and could potentially take a paycut once I become a new nurse.

I'm wasting my life away at my desk too, I can't wait to get out! Jobs in accounting are plentiful though, that's probably one of the only fields that is still hiring right now.
