Hi All,
I'm wondering if anyone else out there in the ether has been accepted into the Samuel Merritt Entry Level Master's of Science in Nursing Program. Either in Oakland, CA or Sacremento, CA.
Or has anyone graduated from there?
I'm excited/nervous to start in the fall and was hoping I could meet/greet some of my classmates before the first day of classes.
Not many people seem to have heard of SM, though the opinion of those who have is that it is a really good program. I can't believe I'm going to be graduate student.
Oh well, hope to hear from classmates or alum! Bye.

Yaaay! I finally found a classmate through Allnurses.com! Which program are you doing? I'll be starting the ELMSN-FNP program this fall. xD
I actually ran into someone who's also in our class (FNP program, too) at the recent open house (my parents wanted to see the campus).
Yeah!
I'm so glad I got a reply. I too, am going into the ELMN-FNP program in the fall. Are you from the Oakland area? Are you moving to Oakland?
We need to get in touch with each other. I think there is a way to privately e-mail one another, I'll try to figure it out.
Right now I've got to take a stats final (oh joy).
I'll be in touch.

It's called a private message. ;p
I'll shoot you one with my e-mail address.

I have been accepted into this program as well, but will leave both of you when the class separates as I am in the case management program.
Have either of you heard when they have scheduled the meet and greet?
Hi Xenophon,
I haven't heard anything about a meet and greet, although there was a preview day a few weeks ago. Are you from the Bay Area or are you moving to Oakland. I'll be moving there in August. I've found some cheap places for rent that are in walking distance on craiglslist. I just hope something is available when I start looking.
I'll send you a private e-mail with my e-mail address. Karmyc and I are hoping to be able to meet over the summer sometime for lunch and it would be great it we could work it out so the three of us could have lunch together. Or maybe go shopping for school supplies.
Hopefully we'll be in touch soon.

Hi, just had a few questions. Is there a Sacramento campus for Samuel Merrit. I live in the Sacramento area and I am interested in an FNP program. I have had my BSN for 13 years and want to go back to school. Just wondering if you had any info on that.
Thanks
Rachelle
Rachelle,
Hi, sorry it's taken me so long to reply to your post....I've been enjoying my last summer off before indentured servitude for the next 3 years. Samuel Merritt does have a FNP program for those w/ bachelors in unrelated fields. The Oakland program starts in the Fall and the Sacremento program starts in the spring.
I'd be happy to answer any questions you may have about the application and interview process (what I remember of it anyway). I'll even let you read my essay if you're interested. I know how scary/confusing the process can be and it can help to have a sounding board who has been there before.
I'll send you a private message with my e-mail address in it.
Good luck.

Congrats to you all!
I am very proud of my alma mater (I graduated in 1979, before the BSN and MSN programs were thought of)!
The hospital and school have had an awesome rep since it's inception, and all the reviews I have read speak well of the programs.
Being a small school, the personal touch is still there, with lots of acess to your advisors, etc. the medical faculty is top notch as well.
I had awesome instructors during my schooling, and some of my instructors are now your Deans!
Best of Luck.

Hi,
COngrad to all of you that got accepted into Samuel Merrit Nursing Program. I am thinking of applying there for both the Accelerated BSN and ELMSN but a little bit worry about the NET test. Can you guys tell me how did you prepare for it? And how competitive to get into the program (my last 60 units GPA is about 3.25). Thanks for sharing the information.
By the way, I read that some of you are looking for a place for rent. My brother has a fourflex (one 2bd unit and one 1 bd unit are vacant-they are newly remodeled) on MacArthur and 98 (near the zoo). It is very convenient to the freeways. So if you guys are still looking for a place to live, let me know.

I wrote a nifty little blog entry about the NET:

Not quite sure... I know that the ELMSN-FNP program had about 300 applicants for 22-24 seats... I'm not quite sure how that worked out. I should add that when I got to my interview, I was *VERY* impressed by everyone I met there... so I was overjoyed when I found out I got in.
The numbers were a bit different for the ELMSN-CM program, but I don't remember what they were. I forgot what they were for the ABSN... but I do know that it's a pretty competitive program to get into.
If you want my GPA, shoot me a PM... I always make fun of people I know posting their GPA's on the innernet, and I don't want to give them the opportunity to make fun of me.
Good luck!
Nurseforall,
I think your GPA would be fine for consideration. It's a good GPA and it's only part of what they consider. My GPA for the last 60 was a 3.8 (make fun of me all you want Karmyc ).
Kind of a fluke b/c I took all my pre-reqs after I got my BS, it kind of erased the screwing around of my earlier college years. Thank god they don't consider the first 60!
I didn't have to take the NET for admission to the program, I will have to take it the first week of classes though. This was the last year that it won't be part of the admissions process though.I know you can buy study guides for it at Borders if you are interested. Unfortunately I can't tell you any more than that.
As for the competitiveness of the program......boy there is some stiff competition! As Karmyc said, I too was very impressed with my fellow interviewees. I thought for sure that I didn't have a chance against all the uber alphas there. My overall impression though was one where a diversity of life experience was desired over unfliching grades and academic prowess.
I have a fair amount of health care experience, but Karmyc brings other really interesting accomplishments to the table that aren't health care related. Life experience is varied and valued. So is a strong personality, at least that is my impression.
The essay is your one real chance to get your "One on One" with admissions, make it count! Write it, re-write it, have your friends read it and make suggestions, etc. I must admit I expanded the margins so that I could get everyhting I wanted into the 2 page maximum (apparently it worked) During the interview process we were told that 80% of the decision had already been made and that only 20% of the decision was left to be fleshed out. Which is good b/c the interview is unique to say the least. I won't say anymore, I agree w/ Karmyc that it is best left for you to discover on your own.
Good luck! If you have any more questions, feel free to private message me!
