I might be outing myself as a terrible school nurse, but I have to get it out there. There are certain kids that I. just. cannot. stand. I find myself hoping they are going to be absent almost every day! Usually this is a student that I see daily for meds or procedures, and often they are ones with behavioral issues also. Others are frequent flyers that are known "fakers". It sounds like there are a lot that I dislike, but in reality there are just 3 that I dread seeing.
Am I a terrible person, or a terrible nurse? Does anyone else have students that they dislike?

I've had nursing students that I really didn't like, and I've had clients (I'm a child psych CNS) I really didn't like -- what I have found helpful over time is to vent (appropriately) to sympathetic colleagues (people who can really understand), inc. inventing really wicked nicknames for the kids. For whatever reason, that made it much easier to be therapeutic with them in "real life," for me.
Another thing that is helpful for me is to keep in mind that people (esp. children) are rarely being unpleasant and difficult just to be difficult and unpleasant -- most all of the time, they're doing the best they can with what they've got to work with.

yes, i'm right there with ya ! i have a few kids who just make my blood boil
this feeling stems from them being rude, disrespectful and hateful to me. i always try to give them a chance to redeem themselves, but some are too "hardened" by their life circumstances. i feel sorry for them actually.
usually when i meet the parents, i then understand why the child is the way they are. so sad.

You are not a terrible nurse! You come here to vent among peers so that you do not take it out on your students...........That is what we are here for!
We all must let our frustrations go somewhere. I just try to see if I can get to the real root of these kids problem. Often, with the frequent flyers, I also get the counselor involved.
