A new school nurse

Published

Hello everyone, so I just got the high school school nurse job here at a local school in New Jersey. I have been an ED nurse for 7 years and am fully confident in my clinical skills, but I am super nervous that I will miss something that is mandatory or required. I will be the only nurse in the building and yes I have some great resources among the other nurses in the district but sometimes high school can be a little different. If anyone could tell me what to expect in the first year and "the must not forget" list that they have encountered it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Leslie

I found that high school nursing is a lot of mental health which was not my background and I was not qualified for. One bit of advice I would give you is to lean on your guidance counselor especially until you are more comfortable. Mine taught me A LOT.

Welcome! This forum is very quiet in the summer.

Know your school policies and the NJ regs, particularly 6A. http://www.nj.gov/education/code/current/title6a/chap16.pdf

Good luck!!

Welcome aboard, take the summer to peruse the forum and learn lots from all the experienced nurses here. This will be your nurses' station when school starts. Need an answer quick, post it here and you will have a person to bounce it back fairly quickly.
