A little help, how competitive are.....

Schools in the Maryland DC area? There is a good chance I will be moving there in about 3 years and by that time I should have everything I need to get into a BSN two year program. Either DC area or Annapolis...

I have an opportunity to get into a Lactation Consultant program where I live right now, but I feel like that may leave me a little short of my goal and possibly without a job without the RN in front of it. Ideally I would like to work as a LC or possibly get into midwifery after my kids are grown. So right now I either commit to getting my 60 pre-reqs in the next 3 years or get into the LC program which takes a year (and a year out of schooling). My fear is that I work at getting all these credits and get to Maryland and I cant get into a school, my other fear is that I put time and money into this LC program and then cant get a job. I dont know which way to go! The reason it will take me that amount of time is I have kids, and my husband is in the military. I have to give myself that time to allow for unforeseen moves between now and then.

Thanks for listening, and any advice!

A bsn is a 4 year degree, not 2. that is ADN :)goodluck

Yes, I know a BSN is a 4 year degree. You have to have 60 credits to get into many BSN programs that are 2 years in length. Which gives you the rest of the credits you need, equaling out to 120 plus credits that a bachelors requires.

Be careful, if you are getting 60 credits without an actual associate's degree there is no guarantee all of your pre-reqs and what not will transfer. You also have to make sure the school doesn't require you to be at their school for a semester or longer before you can apply as a nursing student.

Schools in Maryland are hypercompetitive. I am only aware of two schools in the DC area that offer BSN as a first degree. One of those is CUA and it will take you 3 years in addition to your prereqs, the other is UM at shady grove. Another option for you is Bowie State, they have lower standards (2.5 vs 3.0 min, although 3.6 seems to be the avg accepted) then the rest of the schools in MD and are inbetween DC and Annapolis.

The baltimore area has 4 schools, but I am guessing that is too far for you.

Eeek, super competitive is what I am worried about. The closest schools I could find to Annapolis were in Baltimore about 28 miles away. I am not sure if thats too far, but it would REALLY be nice to have something closer. I have lived back east twice now and the traffic was killer.
