A biology student but want to transfer into nursing. Any help??

Hi everyone!

So I am in a very difficult situation now and would like some advice before I make a big decision.

I am currently a second year biology student at University of California, Irvine. I went in as an undeclared major and changed to biology major. I have just decided that I want to become a nurse not long ago.

The problem is, nursing major is extremely impacted at UCI. (only around 8% admitted every year) My GPA is also not very high and I also do not have extracurricular activities/volunteer.

At first, I planned on getting a Biology degree and get an accelerated nursing degree later but then I asked many people and they all said it is better to transfer to somewhere else since I am very determine in becoming a nurse, biology degree would not help in any way.

That is, there is no need in pursuing a degree I will not use since it will only increase the debts on student loans.

I don't really know what to do now. I looked into colleges but most public college applications for Fall 2018 are already closed. Private colleges also seem too expensive. My decision for now is to drop out, go to a community college, and then transfer to a public school such as one of those CSU(Long beach, Fullerton, etc.)in Spring 2019. However, if it's possible, I would still also like to hear some more advices before I really make this decision.

Anyone ever been in this situation? I do not want to feel regret getting a biology degree...

Hi.

Making that kind of decision can be difficult but I think best way to decide is to see where you stand in terms of prerequisites to get into a nursing program. A lot of ADN-RN programs at CC's are on a point system and they want you to have your science prerequisites (Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology) done before applying. If you look into public schools you can transfer but you probably won't be able to get into the nursing major right away. Calling schools or attending information sessions can be helpful because you can always get BSN after your ADN as there are bridge programs. Hope this helps you on your decision.
