A&P and microbiology in the same semester?

Published

Ok, I am all signed up for classes, and they start on Monday! Yay! Anyway, this is my first semester, and would like to get school going ASAP. I am currently taking Microbiology, my CNA class (which is only 2 months), Developmental psych, and ethics. I am also seriously considering signing up for A&P online as well. I was hoping to take it in the summer, but unfortunately, next to none of the classes I need to take next semester are offered then! If I took A&P now, I would take A&P II in the summer, and whatever else I could scrape up. Otherwise I will have to wait until the fall, and maybe will have a heavier load then. Please, any suggestions would be great. I had a friend in the program tell me that I should not take A&P the same time as Micro. Thank you!

I agree with your friend. I would not take A&P and Micro at the same time.

Both require a ton of studying and reading and I know for me, my life came to a stop when I took each of these separately. In A&P you'll need to learn the bones and muscles, veins and arteries which is time consuming unless you are a super organized micromanaged self controlled genius (which I am not). Microbiology is very difficult and mind boggling. To do it justice you should really ENJOY learning it and not feel stressed by it. Therefore, on its own is the way to go. Our professor recommended going solo for it and I am glad I took his advice. I rocked an A and loved the content! I have never taken an online class but my two college daughters have and they did not care for it. Again, unless you have that self disclipline piece. Good luck. Get your rest and have fun!

I took A&P II and Microbio together. I was in the lab A LOT. I also took stats and Nutrition during the same semester. I think it depends on the institution and what your entire picture is going to look like.

For me, Micro was three tests, including the final and the 6 hours in lab. A&P is three tests and the lab practical stuff.

I actually took Micro, AP2 and general psych all online during last summer semester. It was a very busy semester. I was putting in 20+ hours into my labs and sometimes working 16 hours on both Saturday and Sunday, besides doing lots of schoolwork during the week. I wouldn't want to take anymore classes than I did. If you take Micro I would considering dropping on of your other non-sciences, but then again, its a longer semester during spring than summer happened to be. Your GPA is what's important so judge your class load accordingly. I took a few sciences at a time, but loaded up my social sciences last fall and this spring, they are MUCH easier than the true sciences were for me, so I piled them on.

BTW - I LOVED Microbiology, it's been my favorite class, and AP2 was awesome as well. I love online classes and have all A's, it is a fantastic option for me and my family.

That quote really made me laugh! :rotfl: Thank you! I am definitely not that either...

And thanks to everyone for the advice. I just may wait until fall, and hope that *maybe* it will be offered in the summer. I know my CNA class may not be "hard," but I know that it is time consuming, and it still is my first semester. I do want to keep my GPA up, so maybe I will cool it, and not try to overwhelm myself. I was just SO disappointed that none of the classes I wanted were offered in the summer!

I took Anatomy and Micro together and I wouldn't say it's impossible but it is a lot of work. For me I did way more studying in Anatomy than I did in Micro (My micro class was fairly easy but that's only because I had a simple professor). What helped is that I only had Anatomy once a week so I knew I had a whole week to catch up on the material. The tests were crazy though and they piled up. I had six (3 lecture and 3 lab) for each class so it was definetely hell! Especially since my Anatomy tests were longer than life sometimes! (70+ questions)

I do think however with the rest of your load that you shouldn't take it. I took those two classes along with two classes that I found to be simple so I didn't have to dedicate much time to them. The CNA class alone will probably be a lot of work and time.

I would only take one of those per semester...it would not only be hard on you, but those courses are also a solid foundation for your future nursing knowledge, so it's better in the long run to focus on only one at time. Also, at most nursing schools, those classes are weighted a little more heavily during admissions, so it will do you well to get the best grade you can.

I took both A&P and Micro in the same semester. I got B's in both classes. I wouldn't recommend this unless you are very dedicated to your studies. During test time for each class I always felt like I studied for one class more than another. Now that I am in Nursing school, I wish I would have really, really focused more on A&P. Good Luck to you in what ever you decide to do.

i took ap2, and microbio in the summer last year

got an A in AP2, and a C in micro (didnt expect to get that)

but hey, i got into the program this fall because i did that

I took A&P I and micro in the same summer semester and got As in both. I also worked 40 hours a week, but i had absolutely NO life. I studied in all of my free time, including breaks at work. It would be very challenging with a full courseload.

I start nursing school tomorrow, and I think that experience helped me develop time management skills and I use it as inspiration whenever I start to feel overwhelmed.

All in all, you decide what you are capable of handling and how you do it.

I am taking A&PII and Micro this spring. Oh, and working full time as well. I think it can be done....it's all about time management.

A&P I was actually a prereq for Micro where I took the class. :) Micro blew my mind. Both of my A&Ps were like a cakewalk for me, and then I got to Micro (all cocky like, :p) and ended up having to REALLY work at the class. It's a LOT of crazy information.

Good luck!
